Time Saving Tools

Post by 68 Ford Stepside »

I am an avid believer in useful tools at my disposal. The right tools can save hours of unnecessary labor & the resulting loss of religion in your language. One of my favorite & useful tools is my video inspection camera. I can inspect the inside of a cylinder & valves without removing the head. I can inspect the gearing inside a transmission or third member without disassembly. I can inspect any area that is not easily accessible. Buying this tool is money well spent.

It would have been a wonderful thing if I had one forty years ago. About twenty years ago I did have a fiber optic unit, but it wasn't nearly as efficient as this camera. Another neat thing is I can plug in this unit to my laptop for a bigger screen.

A added benefit I didn't mention in the original post is the accessory magnet that attaches to the camera end. Let's say you have the carb off of your truck & drop a nut into the intake manifold & it bounces into one of the intake runners. You can run the probe down into the runner, locate the nut & retrieve it. Certainly beats removing the intake. Let's push it a little further. Let's say it bounces into the intake runner, through an open valve, into the cylinder. Then you could remove the spark plug & try to retrieve it there. The possibilities are nearly unlimited. It's generally called a "borescope", used for looking inside holes. I use them for inspecting the insides of welded structures for corrosion or damage. Sometimes they're jokingly referred to as a "home colonoscopy kit" and the always say NOT FOR MEDICAL USE on them. :D
