is "chrome" paint really chrome?

Post by mcheath »

So is the chrome paint really that? Is it shiny and reflective like chrome? Last time I messed with such, back in the 80's, it was simply silver aluminum in color. Has it gotten better?

That's pretty much what it was last time I used some about a year ago.

I always called it "chrome in a can".

I was watching "My Classic Car" and Dennis Gage was in Jay Leno's garage. Jay was talking about some kind of new chrome dip that people can do at home and that it is safe for the environment and turns out as good or better than traditional chrome. Jay said he uses that stuff to rechrome all his parts instead of sending them off for traditional chroming. I don't remember him saying what the stuff is called though. Anyone know anything about what he could have been talking about? :?

its not chrome its just plain hurtin
it'll look shiny (but still not like chrome) for the first day and a half or if you're really lucky most of a week, then it'll quickly fade to a dull aluminum like shade of semi silver
the only paint i've ever used that would stay even close enough to shiny to be called chrome-like was some aluminum fish boat paint i used years ago on a ladder rack i built for my buddy
- still got my first first car 20+yrs later : 69 f100 sorta kinda pretending its a Mercury M100 w/a 70 f350 sport custom cab (factory buckets) 67 grille with 69 ranger cooneyes 68 merc box and hood, some supercool fiberglass fenders i scored way back when, 76 f150 disc brake frontend..currently running a 90 5.0HO 4bbl/c4 auto & 3.50 posi...originally a 360/c6 f100 Ranger with dealer added towpack (incl. kelsey hays trailer brake),boxside toolbox, behind the seat stowage & belly tank...only original parts left on 'er are the frame, rear end, rear springs, and rear bumper...
