What If

Post by 68 Ford Stepside »

What if the EPA & the state I live in told me tomorrow I could no longer drive my old truck unless it passed federal emission standards. I would have only two choices, park it forever or enable it to pass the test. The cost would be great, but the technology is out there to keep old blue on the road indefinitely. See Attached.

Yeah only 1400 bucks and you can have fuel injection..... Ouch. I would love to have it but that would probably not be the only thing they would force on ya like cats and other smog stuff. Which to me takes away from the alure of these old, easily fixable machines.
Has anyone used this? If so how do ya like it

I've done several EFI 300 six swaps into bumps and dents for a whopping total investment around $300 each.

My first business venture was making parts for DIY fuel injection guys. I had some pretty cool methods to convert any intake manifold to port injection, even a cast iron dual plane.

The best part about making parts to put EFI on old truck engines is lots of people think it's cool, but nobody wants to spend a thing for it or figure much out for themselves. They want to drop it on and turn a knob or something.

TBI injection is a total waste of your time and money. It starts cold better than a carb, that's it. If you put TBI on a 1970's gas engine it won't meet any emissions standards, it won't get any better fuel economy. It will have a very slight driveability advantage.

If you want EFI put a modern engine in your bump. Ford EEC-IV engines are so well supported it's ridiculous. A port injection 300 six is lightyears ahead of a carb 300 six with TBI slapped on top.

I live in California and all they would do is make me install a PCV valve, oh I already have one. I'd also have to run a piece of flex tubing to my air cleaner snout from the exhaust manifold. If California started doing inspections on older vehicles they would most likely just make sure what they came with was still installed and worked as designed. There was a time in the sixties when they made after market kits that had to be installed, but I think they learned their lesson from that experience, it didn't work well. My biggest concern is clunker laws and high scrap prices eliminating the sources for used parts.

Buy an EFI 300 six truck, take what you need and scrap the rest. I know I've typed pages on this stuff years ago on this site and there have been several documented EFI installs on this site. Fordfuelinjection.com used to be a great resource for any EEC-IV swap you could want. No idea if it's still around or what else there is now.

If you want aftermarket Megasquirt is impossible to beat.

Diesel makes way more sense though.
