Price Shock At Ford Dealer.

Post by 68 Ford Stepside »

Carried the better half's car in today for four new tires. Normally wouldn't use the Ford dealer for tires, but they guarantee to match anyones price & I like the guys down there. While waiting for the tire installation, I walked over to parts dept. to ask a price on some wheels my son has stored at home. He once owned a 2003 Harley-Davidson F-250 4x4 & had taken the factory wheels off & mounted aftermarket wheels & tires. When he sold the truck later, he kept the factory wheels.

I asked the parts guy to give me a price on a wheel & center cap to fit a 2003 Harley-Davidson F-250 4x4 eight lug wheel. The price was $2,100.00 for the wheel & $58.00 for the center cap. I told him I didn't want a price on the whole set, just one wheel. He said that is the price on one wheel. I'm dern glad I don't need one. That's just crazy in my book.

The parts guy said Ford doesn't make that wheel anymore & the existing stock is for sale at $2100.00 each. :?

I work in a plant that makes parts for Honda. Periodically we have to bring obsolete tooling over form the warehouse and run service parts. The jigs for the robotic welders have long since been converted over to run other parts, plus the weld programs would need to be reinstalled, fine tuned. So what generally happens is that the service parts get hand welded. It takes time and a lot of additional labor. We then sell the service parts for 10 times the original part cost. I'm sure the other auto makers do the same. So don't be too hard on the parts counter guys. It's nothing they have any control over.

I think there's a company out there that sells regular struts to fit in place of the air ride system and get away MUCH cheaper than trying to keep it going. Just a thought you might want to check into.
