Prestone 50/50 antifreeze (water alone won't cut it if you bust a hose).
Motor oil / Type F tranny fluid if it's a slushbox.
Maglight and visegrips.

Great suggestions so far, with the long lonely stretches you will be going through I would suggest a first aid kit since if you do have to stop for a repair help could be a ways out if you bust your knuckles up. Also, perhaps a can or two of some food, just in case it is a repair you can't get done in a timely manner or get stranded for a little while.

I know I hate working on an empty stomach, and those who know me know it is rarely empty

I don;t leave home without a tool kit whether in the 75 cj5 or a buddies brand new diesel. Here are a few things I like to tote along.

Tool kit-pliers, channel locks, vice grips, crescent wrench, assorted wrenches and 3/8" sockets, screwdrivers, electrical tape, zip ties and a few random bolts and nuts.

-mechanical fuel pump
-a gallon or two of water, oil, ps and brake fluid
-gloves
-a few candy bars. Those calories can keep a guy alive for awhile if stranded somewhere
-sleeping bag

The regular sized tool box would stay in the floor board, and the rest fits behind the seat (unless there is a gas tank )

You may want to consider leaving the sand behind. You certainly won't need it for most of the trip and it' will not do anything for your gas mileage. If the road reports show snow and ice in places you could use a plastic tub or gallon milk jugs filled with water. When you're through the threat you can dump the water.

On a side note, if you have a timing light, on a long trip like that it would be interesting to see what a little advanced spark does for fuel economy. I've heard that modern fuels burn different and advancing the spark helps. If your engine pings on hills it's time to back it off.

If I bought everything on the list, yes it would.

I've purchased an AAA membership (the premier one - 200 mile tow should the feces hit the oscillating air movement device) which'll remove the need for many of the parts listed - if I break down I'll get a tow to the next big town and complete repairs there. Considering changing the route - open to suggestions by anyone here.

One tool that I dont believe has been mentioned yet for a road trip......A firearm. Since you will be travelling through some gun friendly states and seeing how you are from Texas. Don't for get to take it!

Sidearm of your choice in your most comfortable holster, with an extra magazine/speedloader. If you have a TX carry permit you should be legal from ID to TX by almost any route (stay clear of NV). Just in case there are any bears/snakes/jealous boyfriends along the way.
