Post by 68 Ford Stepside »

According to the guy selling this truck, there are no titles on trucks this old in Georgia. Is that a true statement ? :?

I am not from GA but I did some searching for ya and according to page 21 of this you do not have to have a title for a 1985 and older vehicle.
http://motor.etax.dor.ga.gov/forms/pdf/ ... manual.pdf

on page 22 of this lets you know what you need to get it transferred to you.

hope this helps

also you may want to read the bottom of page 22 because it says you cannot get a title out for out of state if there isn't one on file for the vehicle in GA

That is a true statement. Only a bill of sale is required to get it registered here in Georgia, for vehicles from 1985 and back, and that can even be a handwritten one. I once got a '76 Jeep J10 registered with 2 bills of sale, one from owner1 to owner2 and one from owner2 to me. The bill of sale from owner1 to owner2 was handwritten, literally, on the corner of a page out of a notebook and just said "I sold this '76 Jeep J10 VIN#xxxxxxxx...... to Joe Blow on mm/dd/yy for $500. Signed Billy Bob  (The names have been changed to protect the innocent.) I don't know about having it transferred to another state though.

Interesting. I'm not sure if they are required but when I bought my '68 flare side from Montana and registered it in Georgia, I turned in the Montana title and was provided with a Georgia title. Maybe they are issued if you have previous title?

Yes, but you have to ask for it and pay for it and they will try to talk you out of it.

Oh, and once it is changed to an untitled veh, they won't issue a title on it again.

In GA if the bill of sale isn't from the last registered owner it will be a problem.

I buy and sell from GA all the time. It's no big deal.
Same issue for AL, save for the year being 1974 and older.

Easy way is to get it tagged by someone in GA for a minimum of 30 days and then have that person sell it to you out of state. They'll need to get the b.o.s. notarized at the GA dmv and they'll give an extra form that needs to be filled out and notarized for u to take to your dmv.
At this point some states issue titles and others require a state records search (normally $10) that takes a week to a month. Then when it comes back clear, you get a new title. That's where having a current GA tag comes in handy.

For the short of it, get the seller to ride with you to his or her nearest dmv and take care of it all at once.
