Scary day

Today at the shop we had a 1977 international truck come in needing brakes and drums. I seen that was bolt in the tire so I patched it was split rim wheels. It came off fine it when on fine I was air in the cage. Well it got to 90 psi and the rim slipped off loudest noise ever heard and scared me and everybody around. It cracked the side of the cage. I HATE SPLIT RIMS WHEELS

I'd rather be a cop in a gun fight than to mess with split rims. Good fortune was with you this time.

I told my uncle about today. He used to work at diesel right as soon as them cages came out. There was this old that don't all the tires and he was never told how to used it. The boss told he has to used it from now on. Next day he was working on a tire I was time to air it up , he rolls it to the outside of the cage. He steps inside of the cage and starts airing it up!!!

When I worked in a service station, 1966 to 1967, a fellow employee had a bead brake on a car tire as he was airing it up. Like you said, loudest noise I had heard and then he was picking pieces of debris out his face for awhile.

Dang that guy was lucky I'm just glad I put the tire in the cage

Glad your ok Jeremy! Have heard many nightmares about them. I still own a set of four for the rear that have my "snow tires" on them. Maybe someday I'll be able to get rid of them and buy some more rims...

I know those things scare me more than almost anything. My dads truck used to have them and my international had them on the rear. We didn't have a cage so my dad would rap log chains around the tire to slow it down a little even though I always thought he was just adding debris to the situation. Lets just say we waited until the tires were past bald before changing them to avoid it as long as we could.

Of course I have a friend that did some damage to himself on a normal rim because he was using either to seat the bead and put in too much and BOOM. Like you said he was picking out debris for awhile.
