What grille should i run? Opinions pls

Post by Whateverman »

right now i'm running a 70 grille cuz its my fave, however it suffered more than a few little dings this summer from flying gravel and they're driving me nuts,so before:
(a) they get even worse to the point where i won't even attempt to repair the grille in the future
or
(b)the plastic grille inserts get taken out by a flying rock
i'm planning on replacing the whole issue with one of the other grilles i have squirreled away ,all chrome and in good shape
i have a 67,68 and a 69 ranger grille to choose from...
...right now i'm leaning towards the 67grille with the headlight bezels off the 69 for the black eye look
my trucks a total mutt so any thought of keeping it factory looking doesn't matter----so whats your opinion, what would you run?
- still got my first first car 20+yrs later : 69 f100 sorta kinda pretending its a Mercury M100 w/a 70 f350 sport custom cab (factory buckets) 67 grille with 69 ranger cooneyes 68 merc box and hood, some supercool fiberglass fenders i scored way back when, 76 f150 disc brake frontend..currently running a 90 5.0HO 4bbl/c4 auto & 3.50 posi...originally a 360/c6 f100 Ranger with dealer added towpack (incl. kelsey hays trailer brake),boxside toolbox, behind the seat stowage & belly tank...only original parts left on 'er are the frame, rear end, rear springs, and rear bumper...

Considering the choices you've given, I personally like the '69 Ranger grill.

The 67 is my favorite. They are very tough to find in good shape that aren't reproductions.

Let us in on where you can get reproductions? Many of us have looked and been told their is no reproductions made for the 1967-69 grills because the original mold got destroyed in a fire. Sure wish they were some made

:yt: . I totally agree with ya. Every grille I have found they want a mint for since they are hard to find. :cuss:

I personally love the 69 grill but they all look good to me. If it were me I would take out the old one and then set all three in and see what you think.

i should add : i've had each one of em on the truck at one time or another.......
....well actually not this particular 69 ranger grille- it was on a truck my bro and i threw together out of a bunch of my leftovers. my original 69 ranger grille had some (poorly repaired) damage between the drivers side headlight and the center of the grille from smoking a deer or something and didn't have "black eyes"

i'd scan & chuck some of the old pics i have of the truck in its various phases over the years up here if i could find the album they're in,but i still haven't unpacked everything from the last move ..so ..yeah..

:D .anyways...I always enjoy telling others how I would do things,so this is YOUR opportunity to tell ME how YOU would do it

keep your opinions comin!

I like all 67-69, i think the 68 may be my favorite, followed by the 69. If i were you i wouldnt wanna run a ranger grille on a non ranger truck, just saying.

Why do you get hit by so many flying rocks? You must live in an area of gravel roads that are traveled at high rates of speed. I'm just curious because I live in a somewhat rural area and I don't have a problem with rocks hitting the front of my bump. How about making a screen to protect whatever you decide to run? I'm not sure how you would make it, but you need something to protect any grille you install.

...well....technically my truck is a ranger...or was.... now its got a sport custom cab on it...and why not is really the question
...why so many rocks? on top of the million gravel roads around here (and construction all over the place) theres copious amounts of sand and gravel dumped on the roads during winter around here and up until the end of july they haven't swept it up enough to prevent it from getting kicked up and either sand blasting your vehicle (especially windshields) or denting stuff
the 70 grille must be made of thinner material than the earlier grilles cuz they faired much better than it did...

anyways----
keep the opinion comin!

We need to understand the root of the problem - what's actually getting damaged - before giving you a good opinion. Simply asking "What grille looks coolest" is a lot different than "what should I do with the damaged 1970 grille on my truck?"

One option, depending on the type of damage, is to put different inserts in the existing grille - 70, 71, and 72 are all compatible. What is the condition of the 1970 grill inserts you have? '70 grille inserts in good condition are hard to find.

I'm running a '71 grille on my '72. Personally I like the '70 grille the best.

yeah i quite like the 70 grille, but its damaged and i'm slightly bored of it too
and... the question isn't ' what should i do with my damaged grille' i know what i'm doing with it ,i'm taking it off and replacing it with one of the ones i have kicking around  & there also aren't gonna be any pics until a later date cuz my camera is toast so this thread might well be worthless too you for awhile yet, however i 'm enjoying the feedback regardless

and not that it really matters because i'm not worrying about anything here but other peoples opinions on "what grille should i run",but the 70 grille surround got dinged up as well as the headlight surrounds, the inserts are fine surprisingly!

The '70 is my favorite too, but the 68/69 Ranger grills without the coon eyes are a close second :D
