How Much Horsepower Does A Man Really Need ?

Post by 68 Ford Stepside »

I've heard this question asked many times during my life. I've also heard just as many answers. I say it depends on the job the man is doing. People like drag racers, round track racers, mud truck racers, & tractor pull guys are just a few that need all the torque & horsepower they can afford. Not to mention this drug dealer trying to get his product from Cuba to Florida. 8)

I'd like to see how that boat works. Does it really make any difference, or is there a point when it cancels out?

My dad was a massive horsepower fiend, the more the better! Everything he ever bought had the biggest, baddest engine to be had. Me, I'm more of a gas mileage freak. I'd seriously consider putting a 100 horse diesel in my F-250 to see what sort of distance I could wring out of it. Weird that way I guess.

As a Harley friend of mine says.... 3 things you can never have enough of. Too much money, too much horsepower and too much chrome.

At this stage in my life all the horsepower I need is enough to keep me out of trouble when entering the on ramp of our interstate highways. :)

It's been a log time since I had a vehicle with any level of HP worth mentioning and I really forgot that the term HP even meant anything after owning diesels. It's funny to me how a horsepower figure means nothing, almost a fictional fairy tale word after riding in way too many 250 HP "400 HP" street cars.

All I can say is torque numbers mean a lot and the RPM range where those numbers exist is paramount.
