Re: Engine Poll Question

Along these lines I have had in mind a hot rod with a six as well but I want to go a different way this time. I want something old and light, but new enough that I can make it handle corners, and I want to use a BMW 3.0 six/5 speed. I think I have it narrowed down to an early Ranchero, up to about the 65 model year before they started getting heavy.

And Boost! Boost is addicting.

On that note, a small block with boost will give you the power, great mileage, [my 460 get 8mpg] run on pump gas, and still smoke a lot of big motors. A 302 running about 8-9 pounds of boost is roughly the equivalent of a 460 when on the pipe, and a 302 for mileage when cruising.

Just saying......

I enjoyed my sixes, they sound freak'in awesome, and in a light veihicle with gears to take advantage of the torque they are quite quick. Its fun to smoke a V8 with a six, and if you lose you have an excuse.

I always went the multiple carburator, big cam route but if I did it again I would do it with boost. And a big cam.

I just don't see this model truck as a candidate for a modified six, but maybe thats because I have a 460 in mine. But it just seems historically incorrect. The one I did a 300 in was an 83 150, and it just wasn't the same as a 50's truck/car with a 6. And if you already have the parts......

The best friend I ever had back in the day, put a Olds Rocket 88 engine in his '50 Ford. That was the coolest hot rod in town. He would have it down at the corner Citgo gas station with the hood up & five or six of us leaning over looking & drooling. Man, good memories I'll never forget. :D

Nope, I actually ended up buying a 1970 International Scout 800A. It was one of those things that has been on my list of "own one someday" and the opportunity presented itself so I jumped on it. Should be ready to wheel by spring and a lot of fun. No bumps in my immediate future. :(
If only I had lots of room and lots of money, I'd have one of them all...

I wouldn't build a 460 or a 429 if it's a rat rod, they are way too cookie cutter. :zz:

Be original, have some style and drop a Big Lincoln 430 in the hole or a big Caddy engine. Heck, 95% of the folks you run into won't have any idea what engine it is and it'll be decently efficient with some taller gears.

It's a rat rod, it's not supposed to be a cookie cutter pickup truck...
