engine locked up

Post by danno »

Help, was driving around all day today in the old truck and all was good,I came home parked in the garage and later went back out to put the truck away and hit the starter to crank it heard a clunk and now it wont crank, solenoid click and jumped it with a screw driver and nothing. So I went to the shop and got a big breaker bar and put on the crank bolt and still cant turn motor over. You think the starter has it locked up? The motor is a 300 six that has everything in the world done to it and has been baby for 6 years now, only has around 10,000 miles on it.Oh ya full of oil also.Starter is a real bitch to get off because headers run right beside it..What do you all think.....

Can you turn the engine in the opposite direction from which it normally turns ? The reason I'm asking is in case something got on top of a piston. If the piston is hitting an object, the engine can not turn.

I had a starter get between two teeth on the flywheel once. Acted like it was locked up. I had to unbolt the starter to free it up.

I also had this happen years ago. It would not turn either way until starter was loose.

Did you replace the starter then or just tighten it back up and did you have any more problems with it if you just tighten it up

I did not replace the starter, just bolted it back up. I had no more problems with it. Just one of those freak things...

Well it was the starter,Thank God!!! But it also took about 1/2 the teeth on the fly wheel in certain places. You think it will be Ok just replacing the starter there is at least 1/2 of the tooth let on the fly wheel. I sure dont want to drop that old granny tranny.

Time will tell. Most 40 year old flywheels have a few compromised teeth. Glad you got it fixed.

Thanks,I havent put it back together yet.I didnt know if the starter would work on the flywheel.I guess it wont hurt to try it and see.Its just a pain in the ____ to pull the starter with the header on it.If I got ot pull the tranny to put another flywheel on Im going to convert it to automatic, tried of shifting

I would plan to pull the engine and replace the flywheel gear soon. I found that the engine tends to stop at certain places. Those places are where the teeth are gone.
