What's the best way to clean a greasy rusty short block to get it ready for paint?

How much do I need to worry about getting the deck, cylinders, and bottom end wet? Any at all?

Always loved that body style. As a BMW tech is great to see how people love and maintain their cars. Always glad to see another beauty kept on the road instead of crushed, kudos
