Automatic choke wiring.

Post by rjewkes »

where can i wire this bad boy? I tried taping into thermostat sensor and ground out the temp guage.

Does it need a regulated power source?

I think it goes on the stator terminal of the alternator.

Yes you connect one end to the stator terminal of the alternator so that it only warms up when the engine is running, and then the other to ground. I've tried hooking them up to accessory power but full battery voltage causes the choke stat to open to fast.

The new Holly Carbs (6140) require a 12 volt on with ignition power source per the factory directions. The stator only puts out 6 to 8 volts if I remember right.

when i got my truck they had a 74 carb on it w/ electric choke. It was just jumpered onto one of the coil wires. Not sure if that was right or not. Nonetheless, it's gone now in the interest of originality and heartburn in reworking the original choke tube heater system from the manifold.

The "Stator" circuit off the voltage regulator will work ok. :P

Yes, some of the Holley's do have 12V choke stats and it those cases you will need to connect to 12v with the key in the run position. I personally don't like the choke stat heating up unless the engine is running so I installed a choke stat from an early eighties Ford/Holley from a 7.5l which used stator voltage.
