I Love Some New Technology

Post by 68 Ford Stepside »

In the last two years I have downloaded 1100 mp3 songs into my computer. From there I download into thumb drives for use in my vehicles. No more cd's skipping when I drive over a railroad track. Even the old flareside now has a new radio with thumb drive available. It's nice to know I can drive all the way to Biloxi & back without ever hearing a commercial or a dj.

Driving down the road with a friend. Friend says: Man I really like that cd, where did you get it. I say to friend: It's no cd, its magic music & hand him a thumb drive. Friend says: All that good music inside of this little thing? I say: I love some new technology. :)

Hey man, you might want to think a little more carefully about how you post. I don't know where you got these files; while there are certainly legal means to download songs in mp3 format, much of this is piracy. People have been successfully prosecuted and convicted for digital music piracy, you don't want to join that club. What you've said above might be considered grounds for an investigation by law enforcement. So be careful.

I believe what you say only applies if you illegally down load it and then sale it

He didn't say anything about pirating the songs. When you purchase the digital music, you still download it into your computer. So he didn't mention anything illegal in his first post, you are just assuming that it is pirated. I have over 1400 full albums (yeah, full albums) on my iPod which I have downloaded into it. I have paid for every single song on there. Of course, most of them were CD's that I own that I ripped, but still, I have over 3 months of continuous music on my iPod which is all paid for. Just because it is a high number, does not mean it was obtained illegally.

I'm glad everything's on the up-and-up, just looking out for a fellow member. I don't want to see anyone get in trouble.

Correct, and correct. However, he also didn't say he downloaded them from Amazon in his initial post, either.

Not exactly. I said "while there are certainly legal means to download songs in mp3 format, much of this is piracy". Of course there are legal ways to download music. But I consider it likely that the overwhelming majority of music that is moved via mp3 format is not legal. If someone is saying what amounts to "I downloaded a very large volume of songs that would cost me thousands of dollars to do legally", law enforcement might still consider that reasonable suspicion to launch an investigation. I hope I'm wrong.

I'm by no means an expert on this topic, but my understanding is that you don't need to sell it to be convicted to stealing copyrighted material.

Have a great day and enjoy your music.

Yeah, I typed my response when there was only his first post and your reply. The 2 posts above mine were posted within a few minutes of mine and I had not read them yet as I was reading and typing at the same time they were.

Anyway, no worries either way. The only way anyone is going to get investigated regarding digital piracy is if they are redistributing or selling the material. Downloading pirated software or music is not right and is still stealing from the copyright holders, but law enforcement has too much to do already than to deal with people that are downloading only. The rare occasional case might pop up (like back in the Napster heyday), but the reality is that only those distributing or sharing illegal copies are going to be dealt with. I have some knowledge in the field, so...

Over a two year period I bought my songs from Amazon for $.99 each. I bought them for my use & I have made & given away countless custom cd's to friends & family. :)

Man you are way...ahead of me! Here I was just trying to get a CD player in the truck, probably just skip that "trend" and go right to a digital MP3 type player? Didn't they just stop selling record albums last week?

This whole topic just made me wonder how big my music collection actually is as I have been a music nut for years... I just checked my iTunes and I have 20262 songs in my library which includes 1743 full albums!!

$20,262.00 is a shade more than Amazon would have charged you at $.99 each. When you do it over a long period it doesn't hurt the wallet as bad. :)

I just installed a new JVC unit in my motorhome with thumb drive built in & a new Restosound unit in the flareside with a remote thumb drive. I own no cd's now but blanks for family member request. I gave away all my cd's. :)

I'm the same way with movies too.. I've totally ditched VCR's, etc.. My puters are my TV now.
I've got a HD cable box going to this one. I've got hundreds and hundreds of movies recorded.
I'm sitting here listening to Pierced Organ on CNN as I type this.. :/

And I use my laptop for portable use, and use tiny 64 GB thumb drives to store movies on.
I use that when I'm at the dirt patch.
I don't really mess with audio only music much any more. I torch up CD's for the car, which only
has a factory radio/cd player.
But all my home music is pretty much video, and mostly live concerts and DVD type stuff.
I've got a 100w a channel JVC receiver/amp on this puter, going to a pair of old Advent speakers.
So pretty good sound out of it.

Does any desktop have the ability to power such 100W receiver as I've thought of doing the same thing, (go to a much larger monitor-then netflix someday).
