New Distributor
Looking to put an HEI distributor in my truck, Does my truck have THE 1/4" OIL PUMP DRIVE SHAFT or the 5/16" OIL PUMP DRIVE SHAFT. 1969 F100 360 FE Engine. Any help thanks.

Why do you want an HEI distributor? Should be a 5/16" shaft.

I was going to get an HEI for my Cleveland, but since my stock distributor was in great shape, I changed my mind and got the Pertronix Igniter 3 module and Igniter 3 coil. It fits in place of the stock points, is much less bulky than an HEI, and even has a built-in adjustable rev limiter! Just my

When did they change the shaft to 5/16"? I have always seen 1/4" in FE engines. Not saying anybody else is wrong, I was just unaware of a change
. I would also be tempted to stay with a stock style distributor, and add pertronix as mentioned or just go duraspark.

The stock driveshaft is 1/4". Heavy duty driveshafts are hardened and were increased to 5/16" but tapered down to 1/4" at the ends.
Sorry for the confusion. I now realize that you were asking to determine the size of the dist. shaft.
If I'm not mistaken, there are shafts that are 5/16, end to end but a block mod is required.

Thanks for the input I was looking at an HEI that said it was for the 1/4' shaft and not 5/16' And for the question on why am I thinking of doing this conversion. Well I thought about it a lot and talked myself out of it becouse my truck
is all original under the hood and I have an pertronix standard ignition in it already. Also I have been spending the winter stalking up on NOS parts. Can't wait for spring -4 this morning calling for -10 tonight to cold to go in the garage.

i've got an accel points eliminator kit in my 390, works great but one of the best things i did was a msd streetfire ignition box. fires up first time, everytime and reasonably priced
just don't get to close to the wire conections while the truck is running (blasted the sh!t out of me, won't make that mistake again)

72' f100, 390, performer rpm intake, performer rpm heads, summit cam 276 dur 533 lift, holley 750, flotech headers, c6, 350 rear end, electronic ignition and msd box.

i got ahold of a HEI new for $50 and my engine was luggin so i went ahead and made the switch. i had a stock distributor with a points eliminator kit installed too.
the different was awesome! its like my engine got a rebuild. it tightened it right up. drove great.
there are alot of different "HEI" out there these days and all performace didtributors do the same thing
but i noticed zero difference when i converted from points to electric. i dont know why.
i say install it... but im also a 'if it aint broke dont fix it'
