I think I found a truck, how do I get it home?

Post by occupant »

I have a '00 Suburban with tow package and good gears and everything. I want to rent a U-Haul auto transport to pick it up, but WILL THE TRUCK FIT? This is the one I'm looking at, about 2 hours from me:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... 1232661280

It's a 1971 F-100, reg cab, long bed, stock size tires. Anyone hauled one of these on the U-Haul equipment before? Is it too wide or too long or anything? Will the straps reach the tires/frame OK? I just need to hear from people who have tried it. The truck will come with one extra C4 transmission and possibly one extra late 60s 302 engine in the bed. It'll be right there as far as weight limits but I'm worried about the size. U-Haul's site says it'll work...

I'm excited about possibly having a bumpside again. And I have spares from working on this Torino for awhile. And It's a rust-free, non-wrecked, TX-OK truck. Has a nice seat but the dash and column are messed up, and the transmission won't shift up out of first.

It will fit length wise. Width is a different question. Ask them for the widest trailer they have. You may need some 10000lb ratchet straps for the front wheel tie downs on the trailer. The ones one there may not be long enough to go around your tires.

I see some good ones at Lowes, 2 inch wide 16 foot long, 10000lb ratchet 3333lb webbing, I think that's what you're talking about and they're like $13 each, not bad. I did know there are two generations of U-Haul transport, the older ones which are only good to 75" (as in my Torino only fits on them with 205/75R14 tires, nothing wider), and the newer ones, the newer ones they say are silver galvanized and can go up to 79.25" wide on the site there. I suppose I could use the older style if I put the truck on donut spares or something. But I'll just pick the silver trailer out here and haul it empty up there. That way it only costs me $55, I get 24 hours with it, and I don't have to worry that Elk City OK only has old style transports. Otherwise it costs twice as much to do a one-way rental. It might affect gas mileage a bit n the trip up. This truck gets 14 city 17 highway, just like the EPA ratings say, I've seen it dip to 12.5-13 with a full interior load but I haven't towed with it yet. I made assumptions of 10mpg empty towing and 7mpg full towing for the trip back and I won't be going over 55-60. Should be interesting to see what the tank up and the tank back show for mileage on this Suburban.

That's assuming I get the truck of course. Alternatively there is a $900 one that runs and drives an hour from me, but it has a flatbed and is a six cylinder. It's pretty beat up but it's my second choice. http://wichitafalls.craigslist.org/cto/3628677501.html

This presumes U-Haul will rent to you at all for it. They are oddly retarded on what they will let you tow what with. http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... 9fe4a827df

That said, I wound up pulling the front bumper from mine, bolting a tow bar to the mounting holes, and getting it towed home that way.

Crap, you're right. The last time I went to do that they said no for a little tiny car. Geez, funny how the website says one thing and then when you get there its another.

Remind me next time I buy a Suburban to get the 3/4 ton model.

Maybe I should be looking at the beater in Bowie instead. Get that one down to 600 or 700 and then find a bed to fit it.

I just hauled a 67 C10 longbed Chevy with my 03 GMC Yukon 1/2 ton. It has an 8000lb factory rating and u-haul let me haul it. It handled the weight just fine.

There are 2 different trailers... there is a small note on their website that says the galvanized ones might be wider... i used a galvanized trailer and the truck fit with 1/4" clearance on each side so it was tight.. and the rear end was hanging off the trailer a bit. I have a picture somewhere I can dig up so you can get an idea if you need to see it
