It's very sad. NASCAR needs to dump restrictor plate tracks from the schedule.

I totally agree, Restrictor plate raceing should have been dumped in the 70s. Plus you can only see if your watching it on TV, Went to daytona once and the cars looked like they were a mile away looking accross the track.BobbyFord wrote:It's very sad. Nascar should take the mirrors out of the cars, blocking isn't racing.

When you design a car to fly apart to dissipate energy in order to save the driver those parts have to go 'somewhere'...

Being a professional racer and having raced at Daytona...
It is sad to see anyone who has not directly accepted the risks and consequences of racing get hurt in any way. It is only slightly less sad to see those that are directly involved with racing and have accepted the risks get injured. One of the saddest days I have had was having my 16 year old friend (I was about 20 at the time) get killed in a go-kart race in Ohio "back in the day", for a "hobby" and fun race at the time.
Restrictor plate races, mirrors, etc are not the issue.... e.g. Jeff Krosnoff (killed in a CART race on a street circuit), Dan Wheldon, etc.
Racing is a dangerous sport, but way less so than eras of past. Before safer barriers and HANS, when there were leather helmets and on-board mechanics...things have progressed far far from then. There is more work to do.
This situation is not far from the results of the incident with Wheldon - car shredded by the catch fence. Clearly, like the intro of the safer barrier, there is some work to be done to make the catch fences safer for drivers and fans alike. I hope the tracks (all of them, not just Daytona) find a way to make speedway racing safer for all.

If you've never seen a race live, try to do so at least once in your life. There is nothing like watching the cars speed by at 200 mph and thinking about someone inside driving it.
