A Good Deal Can Still Be Had

Post by 68 Ford Stepside »

My son was bidding at a government auction yesterday & won a bid on a 1968 Sun scope that works only on vehicles with ignition points. We don't presently own anything with points, but it is a great conversation piece to have sitting in the shop. It was used on school buses originally. The best part is he won it for a $28.00 bid. :)

That's excellent! Sun was THE name back in the day. Great find.

Why would that only work with points?

Seems to me it would work with most anything having a distributor.

I learned how to use a scope ~25 years ago, and I remember it was a versatile tool for troubleshooting.

Does that one allow you to individually short out cylinders for a cylinder balance test?

Yes it does allow for cylinder bal test. It is in excellent condition for its age. I like the timing light attachment. I haven't taken the time to read the operation manual yet. The auctioneer said it was only used on ignition points buses. I'll have to check into it further at some point.

Hello Art, The secondary voltage on modern vehicle electronic ignition is double that of points ignition. That high voltage would more than likely fry the internal components of the scope. If you only hooked up the timing light, it would possibly work without damage to the machine. I would personally just use it as a conversation piece, unless at some date I acquired another points type ignition vehicle.

Distributorless ignitions certainly are way too hot to use that scope on. But with a high scale range of 50k volts, I wouldn't be afraid to connect it to a 70's electronic ignition system if that was my scope. That cylinder balance feature is very nice and easy to be spoiled by.
