I was just responding to another thread and started drifting into nostalgic memories of past automotive experiences. Then I thought, I should start a thread in the general discussion section where forum members can talk about memories of their bumps. Actually I'm not sure exactly where the term "bump" came from.
While I have many great car stories (getting rearended by a semi in a Plymouth station wagon, packing most of our band gear for a road trip in an MG 1100 sedan, driving 90 miles with a 5-gallon bucket of water and a roll of duct tape in the trunk because I couldn't find the right radiator hose, etc.), I don't have any good bump stories. Let's hear everyone's best non-fiction bump story.

Re: What's Your best Bump Story?
when I first bought my GHOST.. I was driving along when she just died on me.. after doing some troubleshooting I figured out that the fuel pump had gone out on me.. My remedy at the time, because I was between paychecks and didn't want to leave her out there, I got a five gallon fuel jug. I then got the fuel line and had my son sit in the passenger seat holding the fuel jug high while I primed the fuel line, and attached it to the carb. Then I started the truck and we drove home with my 11 year old son holding the fuel jug and I was driving,, the hood was in the bed, by the way.. I always regret not having taken any pictures of the scene, but this was way before cellphones with cameras..

If your worried about fuel prices a Big Block Ford is not for you...

Re: What's Your best Bump Story?
Lots of good memories in my '70 F-250 4x4- Reason I still have it. #1 above all else it never left me stranded in 200K or so miles.
Once had the transfer case literally fall out in my driveway after driving 250 miles home. (just replaced it, forgot to put the cotter pins through the castle nuts)
Rear ended by a brand new Lincoln towncar on the freeway in traffic. Folded their hood up with my trailer hitch stinger, pulled off to the shoulder and they drove off (quickly). Have a feeling they weren't good people.
Pulled 34,500 GCVW over Snoqualmie pass at 60 MPH. Not sure how it did that, but it did. Still have hitch stinger with bent 1" thick ball mount to show for it.
Getting pulled over 20+ times for no seatbelts and every cop but one not knowing the actual seatbelt laws and letting me go. The one older guy that actually knew the laws understood my standpoint on lap belts and told me to keep doing what I was doing and carry on.
Start installing DUI distributor 8 PM Sunday night. Drop oil pump drive in pan. Got it back together and left for work at 2 AM (work was 250 miles away).
Doing a full slide 360 degree spin through two lanes at 70+ MPH In downtown Seattle Friday rush hour traffic and not hitting a single thing (car in stopped lane pulled out in front of me).
Having 454 and 460 fanatics ride in the truck and FULLY respect FE's from then on.
Getting locked in MT Tabor park in Portland on a first date. Driving down a darn near 50' shear cliff to get out. Never saw her again, but I had fun. Speaking of women- That seat saw a lot of action! Never done "those things" in any other vehicle. Something about the bump eh?
Met a couple really good friends because they're into old Ford 4x4's too.
Good trucks.

Speaking of seatbelt laws, what exactly is legal in WA and OR? I've driven by at least a dozen cops within the last two months who could easily see I wasn't wearing a shoulder belt, but none of them pulled me over. Of course, I do live in a farming community. Eventually, I want to put in 3-point seatbelts, but it's low on the priority list. Are the old bumps grandfathered in with just lap belts, or are we expected to modify them?averagef250 wrote:Getting pulled over 20+ times for no seatbelts and every cop but one not knowing the actual seatbelt laws and letting me go.

Re: What's Your best Bump Story?
My uncle bought my 67 bump new, he died in 1975 and I purchased it from my aunt, drove it to work daily until I retired in 2003. We pulled our camper for ten of those years, before buying a motor home. Always called it my black lab. Hugo's pickup as he would run for the p/u when ever I said pickup. We took him to the Vet when he was dying in my wife's car, she dropped me off at p/u after he die and the only time the p/u did not start was then "karma"? I have restored the entire pickup and have shown it around at the local car shows and have done quite well. I am now restoring a 1962 Kenskill camper to pull behind it. This pickup has gone from my daily driver to my pride and joy.
