I went out today to try out my brand new rebuilt carb... hit the freeway, got up to 50 MPH, and the hood flew open and slammed into the drip rail! Braked hard, pulled over to the shoulder... slammed hood, got in truck, drove home.
Damage? The hood is ruined. Both hinges are broken. The drip rail is fine. Could have been a lot worse. I may chain the new one shut!

I feel your Pain. Did same thing last fall. My hood is fixable but then it is time to paint the truck.

Lucky it didn't take out the windshield and the roof...I had a carbon fiber hood fly open at 120mph at Mid Ohio last year - it destroyed the hood, hinges, windshield, roof, and a pillars.

Glad to hear it didn't do any more damage. A buddy had this happen with his '70 Impala. He'd just finished doing some work on the engine. We hit the highway, got up to 60-65 mph when the hood flew open.
It basically bent the hood in half, but surprisingly, didn't do any other damage.

This reason is my theory on why my truck came with extra hood badges on rear, the wrong year F-O-R-D letters on the hood, and hood pins.

Seems to be a trend here! In another post I did "The wreck of the ol' 67" the hood flew open on that one as well on the freeway after a second front clip had been installed. So he chained it shut with a lock after that.

I haven't looked back at my post... I figured out why it flew open. Some previous owner removed and didn't replace the secondary hood latch. I've got a "new" truck now... I can only imagine how scary it would have been in the '70 impala, that car has a hood the size of a sheet of plywood!

Same here! Hood, hinges, and roof damage 50 mph. I take a bolt and welded a chain link to it and drilled a hole though my radiator support on the drivers side. Then I take a chain and looped it through the hood and pad locked it. Works great and keeps a**holes from stealing your battery and air cleaner.
