engine swap?

Post by buff »

I have a neighbor with a 460 4V out of a Lincoln 1977 with 62K on it and transmission. Is there someone that can give me an idea how much work it would be to put in my 69 F100 or if it would work?

Get enigine perches from a 73-79 F100 w/460 and it bolts right in. http://www.fordification.com/tech/engine-perches.htm

What engine is in it currently? I ask because if it's a six cylinder, you'll need to get a bigger radiator to cool the 429. Also, you may need to modify the drive shaft. Otherwise, Bobby's right...they bolt right in using the later perches. If my memory serves me, Bobby's running a 460 in his bump (basically the same as a 429) so he is one of us with the answers.

Also if it is a factory six cylinder truck, you will have to trim out the core support to allow air to the bigger radiator. Sixes used a small opening core support and V8's used a large opening core support. It's an easy fix; I learned this when I swapped my 240 for the 351C. :D

I am dropping a 460 w/C6 into my 67 F250 (org having 352 w/ Cruise-o-matic)

Agree with the comments above about perches/radiators. I will need to shorten my driveshaft.

Too be honest it does take some work but nothing has proven to be impossible yet, there will be little things that pop up like kick down levers, throttle linkage. (In my application I have a much taller intake so I pulled a peddle/cable from an 83 as a replacement)

Message me if you have any questions, I am happy to talk about my experience.

Having put a '76 Lincoln 460 in my bump I will chime in with a few items. If you are running the stock suspension you will need the motor mounts Bobby stated. I would also look to getting a set of coils for the front that are for a 460 truck (dent). The core support & radiator issue has been addressed. I had to shorten my driveshaft 9". I am using the Lincoln C6. If you plan on using the Lincoln C6 some decisions will need to be made concerning shifter. I am running a tilt column from a dent. I want column shift. The shift arm & kickdown in the trans are wrong & will need swapped out. Any truck C6 will have the correct arms. You can take the Lincoln arm out (shift) & turn it over. I can not reach L with this configuration. The kickdown is tied in place as it can not be used in present configuration. Another option would be to use the crossbar setup from the Lincoln which would make the kickdown useable. It reverses the throw of the shifter (column) so turning the shaft upside down would not be required. A floor shifter with cable could also be used with stock configuration.

Pretty straight forward swap for the most part since Ford did put them in dents. Any parts you will need you can just but for a dent 2wd with a 460
