i have a 69 longbed licensed and registered in my name with antique tags. the truck runs good and the cab is really good shape for it year, but the bed is taost. i recently found a really good deal on a shortbed frame and bed thats in good shape but does not come with a title. i would really like to mount my cab and running gear on the shortbed, but if i do this the title and vin tag will be incorrect for the truck. if i do the conversion will i have to worry about any legal problems if i ever decide to sell? longbeds are a dime a dozen in my area, but shortbeds are hard to find and overpriced.

What would you guys do?

Go for it, the VIN tag for your truck is attached to the door, the frame doesn't matter, and you would be doing yourself a favor. You could always keep and restore the frame and look for another long bed and switch back later on if so inclined. As for legal, you could get it changed at the DMV, should anyways, I have done that here in California, gone fro long to short and gas to diesel, they just want their taxes for the weight and such, otherwise, they don't care.

It wouldn't be an issue here in Ga. As ling as they're both F100's I wouldn't think it would be a problem. The only real difference on the door tag is the wheelbase designation and not many people even care about those. If you sell it later I would have full disclosure of your swap though.

I agree with Randy. I realize the VIN on the chassis will not match the door but the door is what I have found law enforcement is concerned with. I would also do a full disclosure if you ever sell it so the new owner knows exactly what they are buying. We are talking about an almost 50 yr old vehicle.

What is involved in getting an abandoned title on the short bed?

I prefer to have the VIN's correct and legal and the 2 VINs on the frame should match the door. Title examiners are getting more difficult. As older vehicles becoming more valuable, I only seeing the situation getting worse.

The tag should definitely match the VIN. Police don't care about full disclosure particularly if some non-routine situation occurs.

Full disclosure to the next owner is great and highly recommended.

Good long beds are not hard to find so replacing yours would cost $300 to 500.

However four guys in this state this year are sitting in prison for six years. They were running a chop shop & swapping ID tags & titles. My wifes classic truck was stolen four years ago & the sheriffs dept. said it probably went to a chop shop for a ID change. Be careful, it can't be fun looking through bars.

I just checked my wifes truck on nicb & it showed stolen & not recovered.

the frame and bed are located in MO, i live in AR. i am not sure the laws on getting an abandoned title in MO, but i have got bonded titles for abandoned vehicles here in arkansas. if i went through the trouble getting a title for the frame my truck would have 2 titles.

my best guess is that the title went with the cab. i will try to find out more info before/if i buy the frame and bed.

wish i had the skill and tools to do this.

if i do not buy the frame it most likely will be scrapped, i hate to see this happen when i have the opportunity to build a nice shortbed truck.

just pop your cab on it and don't worry about it,its not like you're running a chop shop
besides that half the time the door tags don't match the registration anyways because one of the p.o's has replaced the door somewhere along the line without swapping over the tag

The chassis VIN should be located on the top of the right side rail near the cab mount. If you pass on the chassis & bed let me know as I may be interested in the bed. If it is a '67-'69 bed & clean
