1972 Ford F100 vs 1966 Ford Mustang, your choice?

Post by vsanzbajo »

Might be a weird question to ask on a truck site, but I was offer a trade today. My 1972 all original F100 for an equivalent condition but just painted 1966 Ford Mustang 6 Cyl. engine.
Which one would you take? I mainly use the Pick up as a cruiser, no work or anything. It is my main car now days.
And gas is not a factor.
Both cars are almost in mint condition.
The only reason I am thinking about trading is that I am originally from Spain. And when I go back I want to take the car back with me, and I think that a Mustang would be easier to find mechanics to work on them and probably easier to send over to Europe.
Do not get me wrong, I love my truck if I stay I would not sell, but in Europe it will be easier and more convenient to have a Mustang, I think.
Thanks and I can not wait to see what you say.
This is the truck.

Just my :2cents: but if I were you I'd keep the truck. I frequent a lot of car shows with the one I have and to tell you the truth I'd still be more happy driving away in my beat up ol'truck than leaving in one of the freshly restored muscle cars. I use mine for the same thing you do. There is just something about driving the truck that I dont think another car could offer ( especially the newer cars  ) . A month after I got mine I almost sold it , I'm greatful I didn't thought. I thought it would be too much work to get it to daily driving status but it actually is/was a fun project to pass some extra time and learn a good little bit while doing so. Sadly, parts just keep getting rarer for these types of vehicals. Make a careful choice and I'm sure you'll be happy with whatever you choose, but of course this IS a truck site though :)

Thanks for the reply. I love my truck, but I really love Mustangs also. Only the 66 model. I am trying to make the decision.

I have a 70 shortbed truck, and a 68 mustang. (similar to your options here)

the mustang is my daily driver, the truck is my project.
The mustang is fun to drive, gets some attention around town and is reliable, however, the truck is what all my buddies like. the truck is several different shade of primer and everybody still likes it more... Long story short, the truck is staying with me, the mustang wont.

It's an easy decision, I would keep the truck! There are alot of mustangs around and when you have seen one you have seen them all, especially the 6cyl models. If I were to see a bumpside at a car show and a Mustang next to it, I would pass on looking at the Mustang and look at the truck, no matter how the bumpside looked. It's nice to be different and to have something that is not so main stream and the bumpside is different and it does get the looks. Sorry, I'm not trying to offend anyone but it's just my :2cents:

Keep the truck. 1st Gen mustangs are a dime a dozen. Besides, you never realize how badly you need a truck until you don't have one anymore.

The Mustang would bring more $$, but if it is about what one I like best. Well since I am not a Mustang fan, and $$ isn't a factor to me I pick the Truck. Remember this is just my opinion.

If we were going where he is headed, I doubt we could afford the gas to operate the truck. The truck is only viable if it is used. Although some people watch them sitting under the shed, I really enjoy driving & working mine. When my son takes possession of mine, I'll bet it spends the rest of its life under a shed. The boy is so tight with a dollar, he squeaks when he walks. He'll be too tight to put gas in it. LOL :)

Financially, the Mustang will bring more money, but in the USA the mustangs are a dime a dozen and a nice shortbed bump like yours is not something you see every day. Ultimately, it is up to you. But I would probably guess that in Europe, the mustangs are NOT a dime a dozen and either of those vehicles would be just as rare as the other, for the most part. I am sure there are more Mustangs over there than the trucks, but still, you are not going to see them.

So it all comes down to you and which you would rather drive and keep.

Yes my 68 is a gas hog, but I drive it and pay the fuel $$$$$. I figure I can't eat it and I can't take it with me. Now my Girls do not see it that way, but they r only middle age.

:2cents: Here is my 2 pennies worth...It may be a cop out, but I think either one would be great fun in Spain, and it is a very personal decision. You said gas is not an issue, but shipping cost may be, so fuel usage is not a consideration, the Mustang will be cheaper to transport. You also said you thought mechanics would be more available for the Mustang, but i don't think that will be a problem. If you can find one to fix the Mustang, he/she will most likely be able to fix the F100 as well (not too much difference in the basics). I personally like the Mustangs, and having driven in Spain, I can say that a nice Mustang would be a hoot to go tooling around the countryside. However, if you are going for the rarity factor, you are certainly not going to find many F100's in Spain, or Europe for that matter, and you have one of the best looking F100's I have seen. Either way, I think it is a pretty fair swap. Good luck and let us know what you decide! :?

Thank you so much for the advice. Gas will be a factor in Spain, not really here in the USA.
Thanks tbone6.

If the '66 Mustang was a fastback and had a V-8, I might would give it some consideration. A coupe? too common and one can be picked up most anywhere at any time. It's not so easy to find a really straight bumpside just anywhere.

I once had a '66 fastback w/small-block & Top-Loader 4-spd. My first car, though, was a '68 Mustang coupe. I bought it when I was 15 years old. 31 years later, I still have the '68.

My opinion would be to keep the truck you have.

Do you guys really think that I could trade my truck for a V8 Mustang? I think that V8 Mustangs are more expensive. Do you think that they are close in value?
