Things 2 do on the 68

Post by Mancar1 »

What 2 do 1st, and what type/brands to go with. Well time to do brakes, Disc/shoe, shocks, and intake with 4 Barrel. On the intake I have not decided which one. Just want some more seat of the pants zipppp. On the carb a 600 cfm elderbrock. Thinking on shocks from Napa. Then down the line a little, higher gears in the Dana, I know I am limited, and my mind slips. Then new wheels, mine look good, but one is a little out of round. (sounds like a good reason to get new ones :D ) Also thinking 2.5" exh. If anyone has input based on use/experience.......my mind and ears r open. Just gotta spend it since I have been told I can't take it with me.

Safety stuff first! Leave the goodies/speed parts for later.

Suspension, steering, brakes.
Disc swap from a 73/74 or 75-79. Do your homework using Fordification's tech articles for the need-to-know differences.. I like Raybestos brake pads and Wagner components.
Steering.. tie rods, kingpins, steering box. Moog is my go-to brand for lingkages. Steering box? Look up Benchworks or Red-Head steering gears.
Suspension bushings to tighten it up.. Daystar/Energy Suspension I-beam pivots and radius arm bushings.
Good shocks... Bilstein or KYB.
Check your front springs. There should be at least 2.5 inches of travel between the I-beam and bumpstop. Otherwise, call up/log on to Eaton Detroit Spring.

Go-Fast Goodies... what engine???
Always work on the exhaust before working on induction. Headers and dual exhaust. Let your budget be your guide. Hedman, Flowtech, Hooker.... Flowmaster, Summit house-brand welded, or Cherry Bombs... your call. It's too subjective. Dual 2.5-inch tubing on 360s are larger. Dual 2.25-inch tubing on 300s and 302s.
Intake and carb. Torque is king on the street. Go for a dual plane intake and a 600 cfm carb max. Consider Summit's 3310 Holley clone.
Cam and lifters. Your call. These rigs are done at 5000 rpm... remember to preserve low end torque to get these heavy rigs moving off the line.

Thanks for all the input. I have had several older Ford trucks over the years. 3 with the 390. This one has the 390. I plan on 2.5" dual exhaust, but no Flowmasters, been there done that. Huh what did you say I can't hear you over the drone. I have disc on the front. I went with Monroe shocks, air on the back. Entire break system is being checked out today and redone as needed. Wheel bearings r being checked and repacked/replaced. Going to put a alum intake, dual plane, with a 600 CFM, elec choke on. Had Holly and this time going with Eld. Kingpins, tie rods, ect r in good shape. Latter taking the chrome wheel off and getting another set, just want a diff style. It is the CS so I have the sway bar.
I have always done all my own work, rebuilding, brakes, ect, ect. Just feels goos at this point of my life to spend the $$$$ on letting someone else crawl around on the concrete. The 68 is at my Buddy's shop a couple miles from here.
