Learning how to drive
Boy, if I drive this truck for a month straight my arms, chest, back and sides are going to be back in shape. No power steering is something else. I did some more cleaning on the old 68 this morning and took it out for a spin. It used to be 3 on the tree but was converted to 4 in the floor. I'm trying to get a feel for it as I keep grinding gears downshifting. I find myself downshifting into second when I really should be going into 3rd. I'm still in that 1-2-3-4 frame of mind when I really need to disregard 1st cause of the granny. This truck really rides nice down the road. Getting it up to 60 is a breeze and it is just well mannered doing it. I can't wait to get it on the interstate and run it up to about 70 and see how it feels. I just don't trust the tires. I'm flat broke right now due to some unexpected expenses popping up and my left over money from the sale of my 82 silverado and the purchase of this 68 had to be used and I don't see it coming back until October. At some point I can get the tires mounted, windshield replaced, a radio and speakers, oil and gear box fluid change and a pertronix set up for it. For right now I'll just have to drive it around the subdivision and close to home. Anyway, just thought i'd share my day with it so far. I'm really liking this thing, I almost sold it this week to buy a 77 4x4 but I think I'm happy with this one.

Enjoy. I used to have a 65 I redid and drove for around 8 years. Fast and fun, but no power steering. Builds up those arms.

May your sails stay full, and your knots not slip. Unless a slip knot.

Re: Learning how to drive
when i had my 65 i got a suicide knob from the john deere dealer for "power steering" makes maneuvering in parking lots easier.
you've probably already figured this out but giving the brakes a couple light pumps before applying them increases effectiveness

Re: Learning how to drive
One thing that helps when driving a non-powered steering vehicle is to remember not turn the steering wheel unless you are moving. Many of these trucks did not come with power steering, and that's why the original steering wheel is so large, made it easier to do the hand over hand thing while turning!

Re: Learning how to drive
I've figured out to turn the wheel while moving. I just have to get the clutch, shifter and steering thing down. I think power steering is going to be the first major mod done to this truck.
