SB idenification?

Post by 67 Camper Special »

I picked up an old small block this weekend. I heard it run before it was pulled. It purred like a kitten and showed no smoke.

What is a good website to use to identify what it is? It appears to be totally original, it is red, and it has a generator so it is an early SB. When did they switch to alternators?

It came with a aluminum bell housing to adapt to a T90, as it was in a 50's jeep. If anyone needs one of these let me know . I am going to put a TKO behind it in whatever project it ends up in. I traded an old 74 SB Chevy for it.

Thanks, Larry

If my personal experience trying to ID my 351w is any indication, good luck with that. The closest I could get was a mid to late 80's full size car or truck. I disassembled the engine and checked casting numbers on the block, crank, heads, etc but couldn't narrow it down any further. Finally decided on an '87 F150 to use as my guide for sourcing parts.

If the engine color is original (or has been repainted to its original color) it could possibly be a '63 Comet Cyclone 260 V-8. Some 260s were also installed in the Mustangs but were phased out in '65 in favor of the 289.

1965 was the transitional year (at least in the early Mustangs) when the 289 went from generator to alternator.

All 260s had 5-bolt bell housing block patterns. Early 289s also had 5-bolt bell housing patterns before switching to a 6-bolt pattern (the extra bolt helped to eliminate vibration harshness). The 289 was completely phased out of production in early 1968, when the 302 took over to replace it.

If the generator is original to the engine, that rules out a 302 or 351. The casting number above the starter can narrow it down as well as the afore mentioned number of bellhousing bolts. A C20E casting number would be a 221 or 260, C30E could be a 260 or 289. The only sure fire way to know what you have is to pull a head and measure your bore-3.50=221, 3.80=260, and 4.00=289. Of course you need to check your stroke as well if it has a 4" bore-a buddy bought a 289 that actually had 302 internals.

if it's a 260 or early 289 you better check to see if its a 5 bolt bell housing or 6 bolt. if its a 5 bolt best leave it there cause its in a class by itself where the 6 bolts is more options,, 302 head bolts don't have the washer built into the bolt,,, as the 351w has the washer built into the head bolt which makes it easy to id

Its out at my new place so I will see it this weekend. I got it on an engine stand before I left Sunday, but it needs a bath. I'll be back when I have numbers. The paint appeared to be original, and there was an old sticker of some sort on it, but had no time.

Thank you, Larry

Checked the Bell housing, its a 5 bolt, block is black, red valve covers, so it is most likely a Mercury 260, maybe a 289.
