'67 Ranger as Daily Driver?

Post by dolinick »

I haven't been around lately. I have been working a lot though which is good. Anyway I bought the 1967 Ranger a couple of years ago and when the transmission failed I left it in the shop for about a year. I got it repaired a few months ago and brought it home. Then recently my 2002 F250 started having problems and I started driving the Ranger to work. It's running great and I drive it 50 miles to work about twice a week and then about 18 miles to work the rest of the week because I stay in my trailer about 3 nights a week when working. I am off Friday and Saturday so I drove home this evening the 50 miles. It is hot down here in San Antonio and driving home is facing the west so I enjoy driving home after the sun has set. I just thought I would brag a bit that I have been driving my F100 every day for the past few weeks. :D

The brakes seem rather poor but she doesn't pull to the right anymore when stopping. The negative battery cable is bare and looking frayed. Headlight switch is falling out of the dash but still working. The flasher keeps getting stuck so I just tap on it to get it going again. The parking brake doesn't work but I carry a wheel chock. I don't have a license plate light. I need to install one 'cause that could get me pulled over perhaps. For the most part I don't think they are interested in stopping this old truck. Maybe I have just been lucky.

People at work are always giving me a hard time asking if I want to sell it and for how much. I always like telling people about what's unique about a '67 but I don't think they really care. Number one is the three heater control knobs. Then there are the lack of door lock buttons. I really like the fact that there are no door lock button knob things. Of course doors can be replaced and a dash or the cab itself is not likely to be replaced. Were any '67s produced with heater deletes? Of course the grille is unique with the evenly spaced bars. A '68 or '69 grille is my favorite though. I think the '68.

Do you know how to tell the difference between a 1973 and a 1974 chevy nova? This may not apply to SS models. I will give you a hint something is missing on the '73. Do you care? Also, seventy three and seventy four were the only two years with unique sheet metal that is slightly different than the 68-72 models. They were totally redesigned in 75 I believe.

Bumper diff, also seat belts were retractable in 74. I had a 73 Nova hatchback with the 350 back in 75.

The 74 has a "bowtie" on the grille and the 73 doesn't.

How fast are you running her on the highway? How does that 3 speed do on gas?

I've had mine up to about 60 at which point the engine is begging for mercy. Going to be daily driving her to work as soon as a couple bugs are squashed. About a 20 mile commute on the highway which takes 25 minutes going 70 in my current DD or 18 miles along city streets which takes 40 minutes at 30-50 mph (with stoplights) I guess i'll try both and see which sucks more.

wait, scratch that, nothing sucks when you're driving a bump!

Coming from a person who only drives old trucks I well understand the advantages and aggravations of a old driver. I have took a less is better approach since divorce earlier this year and have pretty much turned into a minimalist if you say! I pay $300 for very good insurance for 3 drivers for the year. All my trucks are paid for and either a Bump or a Dent and have no monthly auto bills. I will say that I do spend more money on fuel than some but if I have the money I can go and if I dont then I stay at home. The grind of all the monthly payments got to me last year and I decided its best in this economy to do only what is needed. I do get aggravated thinking of stuff I would like to do to a truck and then say no! I hope to piece a Slick together this winter with 240 power and lots of patina! Good luck on the daily driver and keep extras with ya and you should be fine. Best I remember this was the 2 tone bump that I liked so much!!

For the past six months, I've been driving my '71 F250 daily, roughly 250 miles a week. Between work, and back and forth trips to the hardware store, and fishing, I been puttin miles on that old 390. Just redone the transmission as I'm moving this week from Truckee, CA, to Laramie WY. About a thousand miles... I have no doubts she'll make it. Why? Cause old Ford trucks run forever and a day. It's a good call driving that '67, I especially like the doors off that year, to the point of putting them on Bertha.
