UPS showed up
Got my Sanderson ceramic coated shorty headers today! Be a few days before I get the time to install them on the 68 390 CS. Then I have a 10 mile run to the muffler shop to have the 2.5" dual exh installed. (Already have 2" duals that run down each side, just going a little larger.) That will be a loud 10 miles. Called the Highway Patrol to see if I could get a pass for the run to the shop. Officer told me go for it, If I get stopped it is just a fix it ticket. I may just call AAA and use up one of my tows.

I put those same headers on my truck. I tore them off as soon as I possibly could. The power loss from long tubes was almost unbelievable.

Re: UPS showed up
Gee thanks for the words of encouragement.
I am sure they will be bunches better than the boat anchor stock ones. I am looking for a gain over stock
They r the only ones that I could find to fit a Camper Special. Long tube will not fit.
Have a great afternoon.....John

Re: UPS showed up
Definitely post up your results. I've been happy with manifolds on mild engines, happy with long tubes on all engines, yet those shorties made for a surprising loss of low end power.

Re: UPS showed up
Do u mean a loss as compared to the stock manifolds?

No. I didn't explain that very clearly did I?Mancar1 wrote:Do u mean a loss as compared to the stock manifolds?
I've had stock FE's with manifolds, no complaints for what they are.
Stock and mild FE's with longtube headers and plenty happy.
Mild 390 with those Sandersons and been disappointed with the loss of low end power coming from longtubes.
The answer is I don't know what will change going from manifolds to Sandersons.

Re: UPS showed up
Thank u for the replys. I have had built 390s in the old ford trucks. Never had headers. Had plenty ++++++power with the stock manifolds. Thought I would give these a try. Getting to be a young old fart and am trying things I haven't done before.
Instead of doing the wrench turning myself I am treating myself and having a lot of the work done. Easier on the bones

Re: UPS showed up
I think you might get away with the noise on the way to the muffler shop, easy to explain and show them what you are doing. But you might pass out from the fumes in the cab. I'd recommend rolling down both windows and opening the vents windows! Might be kind of a fun drive other than the damage to your ears and breathing fumes.....

Re: UPS showed up
Look at it this way:
Good but f'ugly = stock manifolds
Better = Mid-length/shorties... Sandersons.... some HP and TQ gain.
Best= Long tubes for overall HP and TQ ...But the bad is heat generation and heat soak on the starter. Plus the starter is usually trapped btwn the tubes and the block. Have fun with replacing one.... And, in my opinion, long tubes are a pain in the azz to install.

Re: UPS showed up
I already have a high torque gear reduction gear mini starter installed and I am loving it. Have not had a hard start since. Since I have a little oil leak from the vlv covers and intake, and I do not want oil leaking on the ceramic coated headers. I am going to order aluminum vlv covers, aluminum intake and a 600 cfm 4 bar. Going with a holly carb cause it seems they have the ford kick down and elerbrock says it doesn't. Was doing all this anyway. Might as well get it done.
Once I get it all together it will all be installed at the same time the headers are. Is my brain forgetting anything besides gaskets, sealer, and a different breather? Oh yea a trip to Riley's Muffler for the 2.5" duals. Still haven't decided on the Muffs. Want a great rumble, but want it so I can hear my voice inside the cab. Nooooooooooo Flow Masters. The Thrush I have on sound good, but not great.

Re: UPS showed up
Mr Mancar, enjoy your drive to the muffler shop.
A few years back, I called the highway patrol & asked if I could drive mine to the muffler shop to get new tailpipes put on .He gave me his name ,said if I got stopped to ask the officer to call him if needed.
I thought that was real nice of him.
I did not get stopped .
I think you will love that set up.
My advice on the mufflers is make sure you DON'T get the loudest ones unless you like the noise.
I don't usually have problems with loud mufflers BUT I put a set of Flow Masters on a modded mustang years ago and hated the dreaded drone at interstate speeds.

Re: UPS showed up
I just got mine back from the custom exhaust guy. Sandersons with 2.5 mandrel bent pipe and Flowmaster super 44s
It's a camper special with a 352 and it sounds awesome at idle, has a slight drone when slowing down, super loud at wot , but overall I could not be more pleased with the set up. You will enjoy your headers! P.S. I drove thirty minutes down the highway with open headers. not so enjoyable.
Cheers
