Thank you sir! Things are slow on the truck right now. I work on a lot of "official" cars on the side, and the shop is full of those at the moment, so the truck is waiting patiently. I did replace the radiator and thermostat, and did another test run. It climbed to 195-200, paused, and then cooled downed to about 180, and then slowly climbed back to 215ish, at which point I shut it down. :hmm: So the t-stat is working fine, opening when it should, but it just shouldn't climb that high sitting still at 800 rpm. I changed the oil and filter, and haven't re-fired it yet. Been reading on Network54 about possible causes, but no light bulbs have gone off yet. I mocked up all my under hood a/c lines, except one that I'm waiting on from Vintage Air. I also installed the Mark VII fan with some custom brackets I had water-jetted, but that's pretty much were it's at. So sorry for the lack of updates lately, I promise the pace will quicken once again in the fall.

As far as your other comments, you're exactly right. The "Super" aircraft you were here to see has been my baby for the majority of my 16 years here. I do spend many hours at my desk, but jump at the chance to get down in the trenches to solve "challenges" My home shop definitely helps scratch that itch, and this truck build is a big part of that. I guess growing up listening to my Father cuss about "moron engineers" (he's a farmer), really made me strive to be a better designer and think more about the end user, ha. BTW - Not a big fan of the 14 for obvious reasons (no offense  ) but hey, it was a workhorse for a long time.

I can't say for sure if my a/c bracket will work on a 302 because I haven't tried it, but if I get the chance I will. - and thanks for the compliment! I'd like to see your Gen II Mini install, I'll try to search for it.

Thanks!!

I have no advice on your heat issues, except to mention that I have read that the head gasket is pretty easy to install bass ackwards, and causes the water jacket ports to get blocked off. I am sure you have already heard that info though.

Yea, the Tomcat was a real beast. Fantastic aircraft but a huge maintenance headache. Hornets were/are so much easier to work on (yes, I have actually spent more time on Hornets than Tomcats, so I know). In fact, as a depot level A/C Electrician , I did the Val/Ver of AFC 027 on the A's and B's way back in the day . It was my first taste of the Hornet, and boy was it great! I was in St. Louis when we were establishing capability to do the center barrel replacement (thanks for lunch, by the way  ). I was Director of Production for the Hornet line here in Jax at the time (it's a long story going from electrician to Director (Night school, anyone?)). I retired as we were establishing capability on the Growler.

My MiniGen install is still in it's infancy, but I do need to start a thread for it soon, I suppose. I have the condenser and drier installed, with evaporator coming next month. I was wondering how the hard lines would line up coming from the evap to the firewall, I had not thought to do it the way you did, so I am gonna steal that great idea. I am struggling a bit getting the hard lines bent just right, but I am getting better with practice. I had planned on mounting the compressor to a March Motors bracket, as it looks to be the best option for me. I will have to order it soon, so don't worry about checking your bracket on a 302, although that would be a much cleaner install than where I am headed. The March bracket is the next best thing I have found, and I know it will work.

Good luck on getting the engine temp issues resolved, and thanks again for the inspiration and the thread.

p.s. Thanks also for making the job easier for our men and women in uniform out there maintaining these "Super" jets!

Oh wow. Well I've been to Cecil multiple times to oversee/assist in AFC Val/Ver's on the legacy aircraft, or simply to do an a/c survey to plan for a future retrofit. If you were there, we probably walked past each other, or maybe even met! Small world, right? I seriously could talk about fighters all day...

Back to bump talk - My lines under the dash from the firewall were a very tight fit. I made every effort to get the evaporator to sit as high as possible. I knew it would cut down on the glovebox space, but I was willing to sacrifice it to not have a big ugly unit hanging down into the footwell. I was also able to locate the heater control valve under the dash (somehow), which makes the underhood routing look a little cleaner. I put the system controls in the stock location with an adapter plate I designed - I posted that on pg 32 I believe.

Underhood routing should be complete by the end of the weekend. The local rod shop called and my Vintage hard line is in (24" #6 Female ends), so hopefully I can bend that up without error! It will run from the condenser to the drier. Then I can get the rest of my lines crimped and re-installed.

I just noticed - THIS PAGE HAS NO PHOTOS!! The guys here can't find interest in a thread without pics (myself included), so here's how she looks at the moment.

Yep, small world for sure. I suspect we may very well have met....

Your truck is looking good. I noticed the control panel for the vintage air when I was reading through the thread. It looks great, but I don't think I can afford (or have the talent) to go that route. I will probably do mine more like the one in the Classic Trucks article (http://www.classictrucks.com/tech/0912c ... to_01.html). Yours looks ten times better, but I can't see doing it for me. My truck will be a daily driver, but it is, and will remain, a farm truck first and foremost, the panel would look out of place in a beater truck IMO  . Your vents look pretty killer as well. The vent setup actually inspired me to do a panel all the way across the bottom of the dash. I will post up some pics when I get there. I also noticed the diamond shaped firewall plate. Did you use the original heater hose cutouts to mount the plate?

Had not thought about trying to squeeze the heater valve up inside the dash, hmmmm :hmm: Also, how is the clearance for the wiper arms?

Keep up the great work!

tylerb43 wrote:Radiator showed up last night - boom! I'll be installing this beauty today, along with a new 195 thermostat (after I test it on the stove before the wife gets home), and a new 24F battery from Napa. Question - should I change the oil and filter now, or can I run it again for 10 minutes to make sure it's cooling properly, and then shut it down and change it?? Surely another 10 minutes won't hurt it. :?

What are the details on the Radiator? Who, where, and how do it fit? I am gonna need one pretty soon.

Keep up the good work!

tbone - I closed off the original heater hose cutouts, as well as heater box mounting holes, and started with a blank firewall. -In hindsight I wish I wouldn't have left the bumps from the box mount holes and totally smoothed it, but oh well, it's a little late now. :dk: And clearance to the wiper arm is very sufficient through the entire range of motion.

Only the forward mounts are attached here, the rear of the unit will raise another inch or so when it's mounting bracket is installed.

The radiator is from Champion Cooling Systems, I purchased it from ebay retailer "patriotcooling". The fit is truly bolt it, fits perfectly and has the integrated trans cooler. It's tanks are tig'd obviously, and I just had to polish the top tank before install, looks pretty sweet. Thanks! (watching your build closely)

Ha, I thought you may catch that. The main reason I'd have to say is frustration. Trying to find the correct MC to fit the F350 booster. I bought and tried 3 different ones, none of which match the booster's stud spacing. I know you got yours to work, so I really can't explain it. :hmm: But I finally said screw it and threw some money at it, ended up with this MBM assembly. Very well made unit, I also like the reduced diameter and the yellow zinc plating. I got the SS braided lines from Speedway. I have a lot of patience, but sometimes if I feel like I'm just spinning my wheels on one particular area for too long, I have to move on.

Thanks for the info and pics, they should help me a lot...the old technician in me coming out, I need lots of pictures man! I see what you mean about the bumps, but I doubt once you get it all back together it will be noticeable to anyone but you, especially if the firewall is going to be painted a darker color.

Lol yeah weird, all my parts fit together no problem. If memory serves For my f350 booster I got a disc/drum MC for $20 at auto zone. Even my drum/drum MC fit the f350 booster. So going the route u did is probably best. I may end up doing what u did, on my 68 anyway. Cause I've had some reman dual boosters on my fairlanes end up being worthless. But new school boosters like on your truck work like a champ. I will see how we'll it stops once she's on the road. I still have to instal the proportioning valve, not looking forward to that.

Any chance u might have a few inside cab pics u could post of the finished install of the brake/push rod? I'm assuming yours is the adjustable type?

Sorry man, I don't have any pictures of that yet, the assembly is just bolted in to check clearances, and the rod isn't yet connected. But when I get it hooked up, I'll snap a few.
67nukeford wrote:Any updates on the truck Tyler??
Hey Pat! Not much to update unfortunately. :( I've been building a group of 7 2013 Chargers, 5 finished and 2 to go, then it's back on the truck during the winter. So the past couple of months I've spent hundreds of hours in my shop, but not very many of those were on the truck (sucks very much).

The first order of business will be to pinpoint and fix the oil leak. Now that I've ran the engine a few times, I've got an ugly amount of oil dripping off the bellhousing. A buddy and I strongly suspect the rear of the intake didn't get sealed good. You know - the "toss the gasket, and just use a tall bead of sealer" Well, I guess my bead of sealer wasn't tall enough. :? This is still a guess, so I bought some UV dye and a blacklight, and will try soon to confirm that diagnosis.

So that will mean the top of the engine will have to come back apart. That really sucks, and I gotta say, it's really taken the wind out of my sails. But I guess the only way to get over it, is to just do what needs to be done.

Thanks for checking in, buddy!
