I've got employer coverage ($5k deduct) and i still pay $400/month for my share of employer coverage. At $334/mo, I think you're getting a pretty good deal relative to most folks in this country.

Its unfortunate that you are getting forced to buy in, but you're definitely on the benefit side of the law compared to most people. Part of the reason health care is so expensive is that in the event of a catastrophic emergency you or your kin can still get treated even if you don't have any money or insurance, but it will mess your life up pretty bad. My credit is still shot from a car accident I had in 2007 with no insurance, basically i can't take out a car or house loan until 2015... that sucks. At 21 years old, that wasn't a huge concern of mine, but at 27 with a wife and kid, its kicking my ass.

I guess its a personal decision, but at 300 some bucks a month you're getting a pretty healthy subsidy and I'd take advantage of it if I were you. Heck if my employer didn't offer coverage, i'd be in the same boat right now and getting the same insurance as I do now, but for 65 bucks less a month. Besides, its your patriotic duty to cough up 300 bucks a month to subsidize some 70 year old dudes' boner pills.

The extortion occurs between the Drs. and the insurance companies. My wife works for an orthopaedic surgeon,s office. It works kinda like retail price/list price/discount price. Say I need a shoulder operation. The declared retail price is $8000. The drs negotiated price with the insurance companies is $4000. If I walk in off the street and tell that Dr that I'm paying for it myself, or "self pay", guess how much I pay.....$1500! They mark it up to negotiate it down and the majority of the cost is for the administration of the insurance. I'll go one better. I had a minimally invasive back surgery 15 years ago and I had it done in the hospital as out patient surgery. The cost was $25000. My 10% copay was $2500. I had another done 5 years ago but had it done at the orthopaedics surgery center. I had to pay only $100 copay. The difference was in the hospital overhead and admin costs. Exact same surgery. The moral of the story. Be informed and ask questions before having medical treatment.
