Help...Swappin' 16.5" wheels question

Post by Gardener »

So here's what is up. I have a '72 F250 with the dreaded 16.5" wheel. (Boy those tires a hard to find, and at a price that won't bust the bank!) I want to replace them with standard 16" steel wheel so I can retain the original Dog Dish caps and look.
Will newer factory E250-350 Van Steelies fit? Called my local Ford Dealer to find out and got NOTHING. "We don't have info that far back"...WTF?
Anyway, I know the bolt pattern is right but not sure about the Hub Bore and stud size. Can anyone advise on this.

Thanks, Jon

You should be fine... The holes for the hubs should be fine. As long as ur wheels are a 8 on 6.5 bolt pattern, ford, and they use acorn style lug nuts. (No washers) You may want to convert to a early-mid nineties 9/16" lug studs.?. I've done this a couple of times now... It's quite simple.

I have a set of 16" wheels on my 68 that came from a 1996 f250. I believe they went "metric" after '96?

The hub bore does not matter, the 16" rims are lug-centric.

As long as you are working with Ford rims, this is true.

Many GM and Dodge rims have a smaller bore that will not pass over the Ford axle hub.

The only issue I ever had with 16 inch rims is sometimes the rims fit but don't turn because the disk brakes have a bolt to hold the slider for the callipers. If that is a issue you can use a allen wrench type bolt that hols the slider.
They always fit the rear of the truck just sometimes not the front. FWIW Good luck. :fr:
