Figures

Post by Mancar1 »

My brother, Sis-in-law, their son, his wife and child R up from Auburn for the weekend. Well my Nephew is into older Vehicles, and is a mechanic who owns a repair shop. I was eager to fire up the 68 so he and the rest of the bunch could hear the sweet roar. Well it a fine time to go out fuel pump. Just happen to have a new one in my shop. I will wait until the rain stops to change em out.
That's life, but it is all good. I must admit the 68 has fired a couple warning shots across my bow, so I should have already put the new pump on.
I am very happy the pump gave up the ghost right in it's very own parking spot here at home.

Yep, breaking down at home doesn't suck as much as breaking down away from home.

Reminds me of what I went through a couple weeks ago. I decided to go junkyarding at a city about an hour away. (The temps had gotten up to the mid-30s, so I just grabbed my insulated coveralls and figured I'd be OK.) Hit the highway and was driving for about 40 minutes, and just as I'm passing through the only decent-sized town along the 80-mile route, the truck stars spitting and sputtering, dying right in the middle of an intersection at a stoplight. Just as it was dying I looked down at the voltmeter to see it was almost to zero. I got out and pushed it out of the intersection with the help of a couple other guys waiting at the intersection to get through.

I looked up the street and noticed a auto repair shop just a block away. I walked up and got the owner to give me a jump start, thinking that the battery cable was just a little loose. Turns out the alternator had chosen that exact moment to go out. So how lucky was I that just one block the other direction was a NAPA store...with the alternator I needed in stock. And of course that I happened to have the cash on me to pay for it (which I was supposed to be spending on old parts, not new ones!)

The breakdown could have happened while I was WAY out in the boonies, but this time the inconvenience couldn't have been more convenient. I felt very lucky!

As some of you may know, I am a volunteer driver for the Veteran's Administration. I transport Disabled Vets between our small Medical Clinic in Globe and the large Phoenix VA Medical Center(Hospital). Normally, I use a 12 passenger Ford Van, but awhile back in an economy move, the powers to be decided I should run a 2013 Ford Explorer. On a run during that time period, just as I arrived at the Phoenix VAMC I was informed that the vehicle was due for a service & oil change. As I had some other duties to attend to, I gave another driver the keys so he could take the Explorer to the local Ford dealership who whom they have a contract with to service the vehicles. He was just pulling into the dealers lot from the street when it started spewing gas out from under the vehicle. He immediately shut it off and the service department took care of it. Come to find out, this was the 2nd fuel pump failure on that vehicle with about 45K miles on it. I now have a 2014 12 passenger van again. It just seems so coincidental that I had other duties and so was not driving when it went and also that he was just getting to the dealer when it quit. I feel so Blessed that it did not happen on the road as I had a load of patients on that run and their safety is my main concern. Maybe I am living right?

What a great service you provide. May God bless you. Yes how fortunate the vehicle broke down when and where it did.
Thank you for what you do.

John,

I spent over 11 years in the USMC in the 50s & 60s and am a Viet Nam Vet myself so even though I did not retire from the Military I spent enough time connected that I feel this is a continuation of "One For All, All for One" and "Once a Marine, Always a Marine". I just wish more of the American public could visit or see the Veteran Administration Medical Centers around the US and they could see a bit of the "Price of Freedom" we all enjoy. I'll be 75 next month and plan to continue doing my small part as long as I am able to do so.
