Overpriced??

Post by mw2158 »

Trolling ebay and ran across a 67 swb offered by Gas Monkey Garage. Item # 221368827148 is it just me or is the bidding a little out of hand for this truck?

Here is the link for those that might be eBay challenged: http://www.ebay.com/itm/221368827148?ru ... 26_rdc%3D1

And from looking at it, that is not too far off from what I have seen decent shortbeds going for here in SoCal. It might be a bit much for a 6 banger, but the shortbeds here in SoCal that are in similar shape are all going for anywhere from $5000 to $9000 from what I have seen listed.

I wouldn't pay $5800 for it but it is in darn good shape.

That's a mighty big stretch calling it "Original Unmolested".

Those are my feelings, is it just because these guys have a TV show that they think these things are worth that. I've bought three bumps in the last 5 years, all in much better shape for a LOT less than that. But they are getting a lot more popular than when I started to first work on them 20 years ago. Of course back then all anyone wanted was 53 to 56.

Any truck in our Bump period is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it. Guys pay $7 and beer at a sporting event, $75 for flowers on Valentine's Day , why not $5900 for this truck? If it's a good deal to you, it's a good deal. :D

You can't blame the Gas Monkey guys for the current price of that truck as it has had 39 bidders to drive that price to the $5900 that it currently sits at. It is the demand and the bidders that have set that price, not the Gas Monkey guys.

And again, demands are different in different areas. While that may be a $3000 truck in some areas of the country, that truck can sell for $8000 in others. In the last 3 years, the bump market has gone up quite a bit here in southern California. 3 years ago, I was able to pick up a shortbed project for $600 and that was with tons of extra parts and a transmission. Now, I have seen complete JUNK without a motor or tranny and missing a ton of parts and people are asking $2400. Complete shortbed bumps in similar condition to that truck are SELLING for $6000 - $7000 range and some ads are asking $9000 - $12000. A quick check of craigslist will confirm this.

The long beds have not gone up quite as much, but has grown as well. Trucks that used to sell for $500 - $1200 are now going for $1500 - $2500. Really nice longbeds are priced from $5000 to $12000 right now on the Los Angeles craigslist. I picked up my complete running crew cab for $2400 a few years ago and you cannot touch a non-running crew out here now for under $4000.

I know the Texas market is not far off from the Los Angeles market, so that might account for the price as well. Of course, there are those out there that are fans of the show and probably are willing to pay a little extra to say they have a gas monkey truck. While you or I might not agree with that logic, it does exist. Point being, that the prices on our trucks have gone up some areas get better prices than others. Like it or not, our trucks are becoming more popular.

That's a nice $1500 truck. Maybe 1750. Six large? uh, no.

Not 'unmolested', not 'original'. It's a presentable rehab, but seeing their show, and knowing what they don't address and how quickly they move from a trailered-back non-runner to a 'sale', I'd run far and fast. There are a whole lot better ways to spend money.
too many Fords, no where near 'nuff time.

or, money.

Shame on them but after watching the show I would expect nothing less. Scruples and honesty are not their strong points....

I think the premium price people are willing to pay includes probably 15 seconds of fame.

Bumps have become popular since I bought mine. Music videos & Gas Monkey probably help this the most. With that popularity comes an increase in value. To me $6400 seems a bit much but then again if the body is as clean as it looks how much would you save on body work? Things like this just make all of our trucks worth that much more.
