Re: What am I in for
You can get everything you need from a dentside (73-79) truck. Just make sure you are pulling from the same model bump you have. For example, if you have an F100 then take from a dent f100 due to the 5 lug wheels, etc...

Re: What am I in for
I picked up a set of '74 disc spindles and dust shields and the rest of the parts I've bought/buying new from the local parts store. For power drum you'll just need the brackets toward the bottom of this page on the right http://www.flashbackf100s.com/new_parts_page Everything else is available at your local parts store or search the yards for a power brake booster from a '67-'79 F100-F350. Get everything from the push rod through the M/C, including the brackets. Just check to make sure it's the kind with the straight push rod not the cantilever style. The cantilever style requires a little more modification. Even if you don't find the right one, grab any brake booster to use for a core when you buy new/reman. Guys, correct me if I'm wrong about that drum scavenger hunt! Salvage yards with bumpsides in my area are rare so I've had to source most my parts locally or on the web.

Well the only parts that you have to get not from a parts store. are the spindles and or the twin I beams. Oh and the booster bracket
everything else like the rotors the calipers the brake hoses the bushings the booster the brake master cylinder and the proportioning valve. Can all be bought at an auto parts store or online.
As for years of donor trucks that will work. Here is a write up in the tech section here aaaall about the swop.

Ditto on the power disc brakes. I'll throw in power steering as well. Do them both at the same time and it's not a terrible deal. Changing the bushings in the arms and beams when you do the swap is a PITA but also a great time to do it. In fact I'll go ahead and say pick up a later dent front end and you'll even end up with a front sway bar. Then your old truck will handle a bit better, stop well and not be miserable to maneuver in parking lots.

Re: What am I in for
We'll I went to my only local junkyard today, and they had only one truck, a 72 f250 2wd. It was equipped with power disk brakes but had the 8 bolt pattern instead of the five. The mc was not attached to the booster but was there. Everything looked in very rough condition. Inside the brake pedal was totally different. It had something on the pad with two wires running to it. I think it was something aftermarket. So now the question, does it matter if it's from a 250 or 100? Can the bolt pattern be changed? It was also set up with power steering, but it was a 360 motor versus my 302, so the power steering pump won't mount the same, and the actual steering box was missing. I think I'm going to continue looking, but keep this truck in mind as a backup. It's only a few miles down the road.

Keep that one in mind. You'll need the steering column if you don't find one with a couple setup. You could also use the booster from that one for a core and just buy a reman. It's easier to find power steering brackets, pump, etc for a small block too. Any carbureted Ford cars and truck power steering brackets and pump will work.

Any body know what I should expect to pay for these type of parts from a j/y? What's a good deal, what's too much, and what's a steal?sargentrs wrote:Keep that one in mind. Also is there such a thing as an adapter for a more modern radio?

Re: What am I in for
If you grab the booster/bracket off the '72 F-250, there sould also be a plastic tube that covers the booster input rod that goes between the firewall and the back of the brake booster. The following link shows an example of this plastic tube. They don't all look the same but it will give you a basic idea of what it looks like.
http://www.fordification.com/forum/down ... &mode=view
If you were to purchase some aftermarket booster mounting brackets, the plastic tube will not come with the brackets and I'm not aware of any being produced by the aftermarket.
There were two different power steering gear boxes. The Bendix (or Ford) and the lager Saginaw box. The Saginaw steering box is generally considered the better of the two. You could shorten your existing column approx 2" to work but getting a power steering column that's designed for the longer Saginaw box would probably be much simpler. I didn't see it mentioned but if you are swapping to the Saginaw box, you will need the power steering column bracket that attaches on the engine side of the firewall. --taller manual steering column bracket shown on left, shorter power steering column bracket on right: http://fordification.com/tech/images/fi ... kets02.jpg
If you wanted a tilt steering wheel, some '78 and '79 model trucks had tilt steering columns in them. I have a tilt steering column from a '78 F-150.

Here's a good write up on installing a single DIN stereo in the factory dash hole. http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... 4&p=664820Green72 wrote:Any body know what I should expect to pay for these type of parts from a j/y? Power brake booster and brackets - $20-$30. With M/C - $40. Including brake lines - $50 max.
Up to $100 for a power steering column including inner/outer firewall brackets. If it has a decent 3 spoke steering wheel, $150 max. With horn ring in good condition - the sky's the limit![]()
Power steering brackets:
Anything less than $50 for all is a steal. $50-$75 is getting up there. Over $75 is robbery. At least in Georgia. As an example. I'm putting a 351w with serpentine belt back in my truck. I got everything off of the front of an '87 F150 with a 5.8L. P/S pump bracket/AC bracket (with p/s pump and pulleys), alternator bracket, idler and tensioner, crank pulley and fan pulley all for $87 out the door.
These are prices from around Atlanta, GA.
Also is there such a thing as an adapter for a more modern radio?

We today I had more time than money, so I tackled my dome light issue the best way I know how. Later I am definitely getting one of those polished aluminum ones made by Ranchero50, but for the meantime here is my version. Now I just need to get the plexiglass.

Re: What am I in for
This is an old truck. Expect to replace everything rubber. The upgrade suggestions are great for making it a daily driver. Personally I would start with front end and brakes. Swap out the steering box for power, add the pump to the engine and all is good. I am no expert here but have read you will also need to change the column. I went with a late model suspension swap. You will really appreciate that move. Replace any worn parts up front. Rubber in the front suspension: Radius arm, beam eyes. They may look good but rubber grows weak with age. Replace them.
As far as the brakes go replace it all. Who knows how old the parts are and after all these are the brakes you will depend on. Brakes are cheap money wise for the value they add. Swapping to disc up front would be nice but I absolutely loved power drum brakes. Swap in power brakes (power booster and master) for sure. You can do this without doing discs up front. Shop around for the disc parts and make that swap.
At this point if mechanically good I would be looking to change out door seals, window seals, cab mounts, core support mounts. Now the really fun part. This is a 45 year old truck. Seriously consider rewiring the entire truck.
Welcome to the world of old trucks. Actually any old vehicle. The good comes when you take it out for a drive. There is always someone who wants to know you because of your truck. It is an instant "cool" factor. Stir in the popularity of bumps in commercials, music videos, movies & the tv show Fast & Loud.
There are many great folks here on Fordification that are always willing to lend a hand with information/opinions. Stay away from Randy in GA (sargentrs). Just kidding. He has a really nice truck. He is getting close to having it on the road. I am trying to patiently wait for the completed project. All the guys here are great.
If you can get your hands on anti sway bars front and rear grab them. These old trucks in stock form corner like a buckboard. Major body roll. Anti sway bars will greatly help this. Lowering the truck will also help with handling. Lower center of gravity. This is a personal preference thing though. You may not want to lower your truck.
