Missing the old days...

Post by mnkeeking »

Howdy all!
I've really been missing the old days of riding in the open bed of a pickup truck. Remember when you could throw all your friends in and go to the lake, or pick hitchers up and they would just jump in the back? Yeah, I get it. It wasn't the safest thing to do, but like riding a motorcycle, that was part of the fun. Just being able to haul people around, and the feeling of riding in the back. I was born in northern Indiana and clearly remember huddling with friends behind the cab on rides to school in the snow. I don't work for or represent the following company, nor have I actually inspected the gear personally, but it's a very interesting idea. http://www.bedryder.com They claim their seating system is DOT approved for use in California, and I'm a huge fan of sticking it to the man whenever possible. Anybody running this system? They claim to use a pin-and-shackle system so you can remove the seats easily. This is obviously an "after I'm done with all the other stuff I have to do on the truck" thing. I'm thinking I could remove the seats when not in use and hang them in the shed because the sun out here will eat them up quickly. What do you guys think?
Take care,
Joe

Yes when I was younger I enjoyed riding in a truck bed, but I do not miss being behind a truck bed full of goofing around idiots wondering when someone would fall out.

I used to ride everywhere in the back of a truck and really do miss it. Of course, I understand why now-days it is not allowed as vehicle safety is MUCH better than it was back then. While riding in the back of a truck unsecured was extremely dangerous (but fun as hell), it wasn't much safer anywhere else in the vehicle. With modern cars and the age of crumple zones and air bags, getting through an accident unhurt has a much better chance than in the past.

Remember Subaru Brats?? They had the two rear facing seats in the bed with nothing more than the vertical bicycle grips to hang on to. Of course, I never had the luxury of having a seat to sit in or anything to hang on to. The closest thing to a seat I ever sat on was the wheel well in the bed. :D

My sister and me would ride in the back of my Dad's 1948 5 window chevy 3/4 ton pickup. He had sideboards on it about 10" high. He put a 2x8 across the bed from flare to flare for us to sit on! Now we didn't go far and it was mainly on state routes and backroads... Good fun!

I looked at the ad and they do look like the old Brat seats. I used to haul around my soccer teammates back and forth to practice in my brothers 46 Chevy pickup in 1976. One time I stopped at a RR crossing near campus and purposely turned off the engine. There was a train way down the tracks. I purposely kept the key off and cranked the engine as if it wouldn't start. The guys jumped off like rats off a burning ship! The guys up front with me were cracking up. I then turned the key and the truck roared to life!! Off we went laughing all the way!

I got my 54 F100 for the last semester in college and hauled a lot of guys around with that too. A lot of fun!

Back in the days when I was young 'n wreckless, 17 in the summer of '68, I was in one of our National Parks cruising with my '63 Mercury M100 pickup, 3 girls and me in the front, 7 girls in the back. :D (I almost said box, then I almost said bed but will continue my story.) The Park Warden stopped me and said, "tell me all these girls are your cousins." 8)

"All these girls are my cousins." :P

"Get outta the Park!" So I dropped the girls off at my tent in the campground, left the Park for a half hour, picked up some bootlegged beer then returned to my tent and "partied harty" with the gals :hd:

In Canada if you idle through a stop sign the fine, depending on the town, can run as much as $169.00 If you have your coon dog in the back without a leash tied to each side of the box, the fine is $750.00 :help: Geez, don't they remember Lassie? The truck rolls over, the dog jumps out and runs home for help. A few years on me now but I will still ride in the bed with the Grandkids and one of children driving, just gotta do it and pass it forward.

We went on a family vacation to Montana in about 66 and my mom put a couch in the back up by the cab, and the truck[Sorry, GMC] had a topper. Three of us rode back there all the way out and back, and it was awesome. Parents couldn't hear what we were talking about, and we couldn't hear them. Perfect.

I used to ride in the back of my brother's '67 El Camino when going to the drags all over So Cal when I was in high school. Just me, a lawn chair & a 150 lb toolbox. And we were towing a front engine dragster with an injected Hemi on an open trailer! It was fun to watch people stare. 1-1/2 hrs to Palmdale. 2 hrs to Orange County. 2-1/2 hrs to Riverside & Bakersfield. Rain of shine! Those were the days. I sure miss that racecar. The El Camino? Not so much! But that's another story.
If common sense was really common, wouldn't everybody be using it?
