Honestly I don't know anything about the tools used to diagnose. That article I read is as much as I know about them. The saga of me trying to buy that truck and having COP failures lasted about two weeks, and involved a lot of sketchy car dealer lies and broken promises before I finally just walked away from the truck. "His mechanic" was doing all the "diagnosis" and "repairs". I figured it was going to snowball from there.

Highboy. That's good to know about the crank sensor. I haven't had a chance to check the codes since I replaced 3 & 7 coils & plugs.

Ranchero. Okay ill bite. What dose it smell like? I didn't think about messing with that spring to make sure it had a good connection. As big of a pain some of these coils/plugs are to get to I would rather just replace them.

Smart move junkman. That dosent sound good to me either.

I had an 03 that did exactly the same thing yours is doing. It being a company car, I had Ford's boys replace the plugs and coil-on-plugwires. Fixed it right off.

Employee has a 2004 F150 5.4, and he broke off seven of eight plugs getting them out, had a bad one (new, right out of the box) that he chased around until I lent him my code reader. Replaced the plug, and then had one of the brand new, aftermarket COP wires go bad. Had to buy another set. He's fixed now, avoiding the stripped-out cylinder head problem along the way.
too many Fords, no where near 'nuff time.

or, money.

I know quite a few people who have had trouble with the aftermarket coils for those motors. You might be better off trying some ford coils, even used ones from a junkyard if you can't afford new ones, especially for troubleshooting. Also, make sure you use plenty of di electric grease in the boots when you put them back on. Probably wouldn't hurt to try all the new plugs too...don't over torque them though and don't use any kind of anti seize on the threads. I usually use the Autolite Double Platinums in all of the ford OHC engines or MotorCraft.

From what my friend told me (he has his own garage, has for about 15 years) he said never use anti seize because it acts as a lubricant on the threads and makes it too easy to over tighten them causing you to stretch the threads on the aluminum heads which you find out when it launches a plug. Those motors don't have enough threads for the plugs anyways, there's only like 2 that are in contact with the plug at any given time.

Makes sense but its too late. The two plugs I've already done has it on them.

The coils are lifetime warrenty parts from the first time I did the tune up. Acctually in all fairness my wife put the new coils on while I was at work.

:? Always use anti-seize and use a use a torque wrench. Then you don't have to worry about overtightening. Next time you you have to take steel plug out and it binds in the aluminum head what do you think is going to give first?

So I've been working a lot of over time & haven't had a lot of time to post or work on the truck. I replaced the all the plugs & only the coils that were throwing the codes. That's where the problem happened. The coils I replaced #3 with was bad out of the box. I took it off of #3 & put it on #5 & the code moved with it.

A BIG thank you to all of you that helped me out with this. I was lost.

My 06 with the 5.4 was doing the same thing you speak of. Ford wanted to take my fuel system apart and clean it for $1200. It turned out to be a $20 fuel filter. Change your fuel filter first.

That. Was the first thing I did. I think it was a combination of bad plugs a bad coil & needing a new filter.
My wife just had to take her grandma to the doctor in St Louis today & she said it was running great.

I have used anti-seize for many years, it is a friend. Like has been mentioned. A torque wrench prevents the good ole over tighten.
