i plan to rebuild my t18 tranny, after that i think it should at least look sharp from the outside. right niw it's got a thick, semi-rigid layer of black gunk all over. i tried the "engine degreaser " from autozone , doesn't work. I'll try acetone but since i work inside the garage in my home, i tend to avoid such flamable vapor
thanks

Power washer, is what I used. Then after it dries, all sorts of wire brushes in a drill for the stubborn spots. Rinse & repeat.

Try kerosene. I don't think acetone will do much for you. After you get most of the gunk off, try something like http://www.spartanchemical.com/products/product/652000.We use it as a degreaser at my work, it's awesome stuff.

Re: how to clean gunk?
On my tranny, I used Oven Off oven cleaner. It works great. Spray it on and then hose it off. Good Luck
Re: how to clean gunk?
oil eater from costco... Ive used most of the degreasers and whatnot, Oil Eater is by far the best in my experience. I havent used on tough built up grime like youre talking about, but that'd be my first move.
Apply generously at 1:1, let soak for 20 mins or so, pressure wash. you'll likely need to repeat if youre trans looks like I am imagining.
