Trouble with flywheel and starter??

Post by Sawdust »

i bought an aftermarket starter that began to chew up my flywheel. returned starter and pulled a 77' starter from junk yard and it worked fine but flywheel seemed to continue to deteriorate. starter shows no excess wear but flywheel is ruined with major dead spot. i'm thinking to just put a new ring gear on and turn flywheel .010-.012 and hope the starter is correct for the flywheel. the parts store got me a replacement flywheel but the block bolts don't match up no matter what way I turn it. and it fits a 10.5 clutch not the 11" that came off the truck. can anyone help determine any problems with theses part #'s

(where can I get a cheap ring gear put on in Nashville TN)

VIN F11ACG36573

Trany C96 391P (NP-435 4 speed Granny Low)

Flywheel C6A-6380 C 164 tooth

Engine C9 AE 6015-B

Starter D2AF11001-CA (160 or 150)

Ring gears have a shrink fit onto the flywheel and must be changed professionally. When the smoke clears it might be just as cheap to buy a NOS flywheel/ring gear. I have seen dead spots on very well worn ring gears and 9 times out of ten it comes from the three mounting bolts being out of alignment when the starter is changed. Or the wrong starter installed.

And "granny gear???!" Call it what it is either 1st gear or compound low. I personally know "Granny's" that can out shift, split gears, double clutch straight cut gears, correctly operate vacuum actuated two speed axle's, go to the house, have a baby then go back to the barn and finish milking the family cow! Sorry a bit of a rant there but I have GREAT respect for the ladies, as I am sure you do too, who helped build this country and drive the trucks that keep it alive. Keep in touch, we will help you out.
