Well I finally took the period correct plates with the 68 sticker on them to DMV to get them assigned to the 68.
1972hiboy sent them to me after I got stiffed in a deal with another member. Yes Rich is one of the good guys.

Anyway I was at DMV here in the big city of Red Bluff in Tehama County, Ca. for 2 hours, and that is after I got to the window. The guy I got was very nice, but he had never did a YOM transaction before. The plates came up clear but he kept telling me that since they were passenger plates that I couldn't have them assigned to my truck. I kept telling I had researched it and yes the plates could be assigned to my truck.I had the paper work I printed out from the DMV web. When I showed it to him he went to the website and printed the same thing out. He went step by step and finally we got er done. Now I have to wait for the finale decision from Sacramento. I paid a fee and now the wait begins.
Yom plates, when approved are kinda like personalized plates. You pay a annual $20. fee on top of all else and you have to sign off on the if you let them go when/if you sell the vehicle.
All that after a day of work.
Whew it is time for a little R&R.

I don't have year specific plates on my '69 Ranger but I do have antique plates (well, plate. In Arkansas, we don't have a plate on the front of the vehicle --only on the rear. The antique license plate is a one - time $7.00 fee with no annual fee after that.

That is cool, but I wanted period correct. I think out here if you get antique plates you r restricted on how much you can drive the vehicle.

Congrats on the DMV success, that is a accomplishment in itself.
I bought a YOM pair of plates on eBay 4 months ago, but I have been dreading going the DMV black hole...

I had YOM plates on my 67 Firebird and got some 69 YOM commercial plates that I have registered to my crew cab. When I sold the Firebird and bought the 67 Fairlane, I was going to get another set of old plates. I researched the California YOM program a little more and found out that you can transfer the YOM plates from one car to another as long as the cars are the same year. Well, luckily for me, I bought a 67 Fairlane, so I was able to keep my same, totally restored plates, from my Firebird and put them on the Fairlane.

California just approved the retro Black and Yellow personalized plates which will be issued in 2015. It cheapens the original period correct plates because we are going to start seeing a lot of black and yellow plates on the road, many of them on new cars. But they will only be able to get them as vanity plates and will not be able to get them in the XYZ123 format like the cars had, or the commercial format of 12345Z or Z12345 which is how trucks had them back then. So at least our vehicles will have original format plates.

Maybe I will have to dig around and see if I have a set of black and yellow commercial plates. I hate their new tin foil plates because when you touch them they should not bend.

My oldest girl works at the DMV and is her branches "go to" for things like that she helped me do the fuel conversion on my title for the Cummins swap and handles the Hobbyist's that come in to her office she is a bit different than most in that she reads the "rule book" in her down time to be able to do this.She was raised be "car people" and is one herself so she gets it and likes to help,she has said that most offices have someone like her and if you are on the level and not a scamming weasel they will work with you to get done what you need............but you need to be nice and wanting to find the "loop hole" you need and not try to brake the rules.You would be at the things the weasels try to pull and how NASTY they can get when they get called on it most offices have an investigative branch that are law enforcement and they will arrest them on the spot and she enjoys that almost as much as helping the people that are on the level she don't like being played for a fool,one more thing to consider is they are evaluated on the number of people they serve per day so if they spend a couple of hours with you it doesn't help there performance rating with management so they are doing you favor so be nice and appreciate there kindness

If you go in to do YOM here in Ca., first research it on the DMV site. print it all out and take it with you. my 68 will remain commercial but the plates will originally be off a 60,s passenger car.
The key for me was being patient, calm, friendly, and helpful when asked.
I also work with the public and some customers are a pain and hard to deal with. In my line of work you wouldn't think you would have that, but hey they are among us.

You are correct in your approach,my daughter worked as a waitress and in retail sales before the DMV so she still has the idea that customer service is an important a trait that often puts her at odds with coworkers as they don,t look at us as customers a trait all to common in government bureaucracy's.Being pleasant and knowing what you need can make all the difference already having the DMV rules/info shows that you are serious and trying to make ti easier on them and you.

It looks good to have YOM tags on these old trucks. I guess we are a little luckier here in North Carolina, Anything over 35 years old can run a YOM tag without having to do any paperwork or approval from the DMV. You just have to carry your DMV issued tag in the vehicle so you can show it if asked by law enforcement. DMV recommends you carry a copy of the state statue that allows this just in case you are checked by a local LEO who is unfamiliar with the law.
I run a reproduction tag that is identical to state issued tags that can be customized any way you want it. The company that makes them only reproduce tags that are over 35 years old for North Carolina Residents to meet state laws. There is one state they will not make and that is California... Go Figure...

They used to make California plates up until about 5 years ago. Then the state of California went after them and they quit making the CA plates to avoid the hassle. I actually ordered a blue and yellow replica from them when I had my 72. I got personalized plates for my 72 that said "72 F250" and then put the replica plate on it which would have been correct for 1972. Thre replica plate I got also said 72 F250 and it was perfect. Now it just hangs on my wall...

So I actually just received my YOM registration stickers the other day for this process.

I ended up having to go to two DMV's in southern california (culver city and santa monica) because the form was not filled out completely the first time. Other than the fact they did not completely fill out the form both DMV's seemed to be pretty familiar with YOM and did not give me any hassle.

I was actually under the impression from my research that you could NOT put a non-commercial plate on a truck.

Truck looks much more correct with the plates on it.
