1970 short wide 240

Post by moon.dog62 »

Last week I brought a 1970 f100 short bed tray back. 351 cleveland, automatic, power steering and a very good body to boot. On the downside it looks hideous in colour combination and style. I will let the pictures do the talking!

So in the last few days I have been busy trying to do what I can to improve the look of the old truck more to suit my tastes. I have also brought a well body tub but that will need some body work before it's ready to be fitted. Let me know what you think of the transformation so far.

So in time I'm aiming for a style similar to this truck. The next order of business is to paint the interior in an off white colour to get rid of the yellow and also when I finally decide what colour to paint it the interior car stay white. Also fix the fuel leak and fit a more appropriate carburettor as it's currently has a Holley 750 double pumper. I'm thinking a 600 Holley vac sec. After that lowering on dropped I beams with disc brake conversion and an axel flip kit for the rear.

Well, it's colorful.
But did you know that your steering wheel and brake booster are on the wrong side? :D

Everything seems to be coming together kinda quickly. I scored a ring and pinion 2.75 ratio from a friend to replace the 4.88 or some such gears that the truck has now. We are replacing the single plane manifold and 750 dp holley with a dual plane and 600 Holley v/s for better economy and drivability. I was talking to another buddy about lowering the truck and he said he knew a bloke selling a set of dropped beams as he was fitting an independent front end, I got these for a pretty good price and we are going to do a disc brake conversion at the same time. Also I was talking to my mechanic and he has changed direction with his truck and sold me his axel flip kip and hangers and shackles. So I seem to have all the parts to mechanically do all the modifications I'm looking for. I will post more pics soon.

Hey crazy horse,
I'm not sure what year cleveland, they were made here in Australia right up until 1985. It's obviously not original, It's a2v the same as most here in Australia. I also have another cleveland in my 61 unibody that has been built for lpg( I believe you guys call it propane) with a twin Impco 425 setup which should be pretty interesting.

Hey Moon I thought I'd drop a comment and share some info that might be useful with you. When using the drop beams on these trucks alls that needed In the rear to match the drop is a front hanger flip, I think a full axle flip would sit the rear lower than what the beams would achieve up front. If you search 'hanger flip' on The main site you will find good detailed info on how to do it. Generally 6°Shims added between the rear spring and axle corrects any driveline vibration that created by the hanger flip. I'm including a pic of a 68 that I built a few years ago and used the beams and hanger flip to lower.

This isn't the first truck we have done Td we did my 67 f250 last year but I got offered stupid money for it so here we are again doing it over on a new truck. Here is a picture of my f250, I was really happy with the ride height on this truck so I am going to try to duplicate this.

Well I have to say that is a killer stance! I thought the axle flip would sit the rear significantly lower than the front but I was wrong! Did you notch the frame on the 250 for axle clearance? Did you use djm beams? It looks like it was lower than my 68

Upon looking at both pics harder I believe you had a bigger tire on it than I did giving the appearance of it being more tire In the wheel wells

ps. Great job on the deuglification! Look much much better!

We used the airbagit beams and axle flip with c notch . Djm don't do f250 beams. I would use airbagit beams again but some djm's came up here so no shipping etc so I grabbed em.

Yup sure did much taller tyres on the rear. The new f100 also has taller tyres on the rear but not as much as the 250

Well, small progress today but progress none the less. I always hated the side marker lights on the back of the tubs on the later bumpsides, and the tub I picked up is of course a later one so today I made some filler pieces out of a rusty old door I had sitting around. They still need a little finessing but I think they look ok considering I don't have the tub at home, just some measurements. I guess the proof will be in the pudding once I can try the fit on the tub.
