People in traffic

Post by Abrams »

Today in traffic some guy yelled over across the lanes at me and asked if I was going to install a "crown vic" front end on my truck.
In fact ever since a particular discovery channel TV show modified a few f-100 trucks I've been asked if I was going to install a "crown vic" front end, if I was going to lower the truck or paint it like "that green one from TV".
I do appreciate peoples new found interest in these old bumps and even get a kick out of the vehicles sudden popularity. I think I'm just tired of defending my trucks stock equipment and wished people saw more out of these trucks than a cookie cutter recipe to make an identical vehicle they saw on TV.
Yes my truck is old, noisy, the paint is faded and it doesn't handle or stop worth a darn. But I wouldn't change it for the world.

I completly understand, people only know what they see on TV and usually they are not the real car purists. But you have to remember that whenever there has been a show or movie that comes out that includes some classic car usually it becomes the latest rage. Consider when the current Gone in 60 Seconds came out; everyone had to get a Mustang and clone "Eleanor" . When Fast and Furious came out, Chargers got real popular. Gas Junky is popular right now, so everyone wants to do what they do. It will die down eventually but at least the popularity of the truck right now just increases the value of our trucks.

And . . . How many million people seem to be using terms like patina, slammed, shop truck, rodent bar (I REFUSE to use the actual term) and others?

Who gives a rip if a truck was on Gas Monkey or whatever it's called?

I just like our trucks because I owned one way back when and the factory stance looks just perfect to me.

All of this shaving, lowering, raising, bagging, black wheels, 35 series tires, painting chrome and other weird stuff is like poking extra holes in your head or paying some guy to stick you a zillion times with an inked needle to me - Totally foreign and completely unnecessary.

A feeling something like this:

Also, why is it that the great majority of the people (creatures?) on those car shows seem to have gone well out of their way to make themselves uglier or weirder looking or both? I mean, is that a job requirement or what?

(And, as a side note, if the vehicle needs to be ready in two weeks and there's a month's worth of work left to be done, why didn't they start three weeks earlier? Phony, manufactured controversy, that's why.)

Next time some guy asks you about a Crown Vic front end, try these:

"If I wanted a Crown Vic front end, I'd be driving a Crown Vic!"

"You watch a lot of TV, don't you?"

"What's a Crown Vic?"

"I did that years ago, can't you tell?"

"You must have me confused with Brian France." (I just couldn't resist!)

Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing - absolutely nothing - half so much worth doing as simply messing about in garages. (Apologies to Kenneth Grahame.)

Ok, what is a "rodent bar"..?
I like the " you watch a lot of tv" comeback. I'm gonna use that next time, lol.

Good day Abrams,

Your story reminds me of something that happened a few months ago.

I was stopped at the light at the corner of Capitola Road and 38th (in my Bumpside), and I noticed a Mexican guy driving a fancy Mercedes SUV pull up on my right. He rolled down his window, which caused me to look over, and he gave me a knowing smile. He was lookin' right at me. At that point, I'd never have guessed that it had anything to do with my Bumpside, and I thought, "What's this guy saying?" Haha. After a second he lifted up a Bumpside model he was holding in his hand.

It really blew my mind! I've been driving my Bumpside off and on for almost twenty years, and can remember getting attention only once or twice ever.

I can't even count how many people have rolled down their window, while at a red light, and asked me what year my truck is or told me how much they like it. Here in NOLA you don't see many older trucks, like mine, on the road. I keep finding business cards on my windshield asking if I'm interested in selling it. One guy even gave me his buying price of $2200.00

Love the Whats a Crown Vic? Answer  .

As for the people trying to look weird i think its because most of them know the content they are providing is not all that interesting or accurate so they dress/act/groom themselves so you watch it for the drama. Shows like this are basically The Jersey Shore, Mechanic addition, in my mind.

Sadly, a lot of people are simple minded and find it difficult to think for themselves so they become easily programmed.

That explains the political situation we find ourselves in today.
