Hose clamp rant.....

Post by sargentrs »

So went to change the heater hoses on my Dart and the cheap a$$ clamps stripped...again.
clamp2.jpg
Drove to every parts store in my town looking for some "good" ones like these
clamp.jpg
or these
clamp1.jpg
NOBODY had any! Wound up buying a lot more of the first one's than I needed because I knew they'd strip. Only one of the parts stores even knew what I was talking about. Really...people...really? I guess I've have to buy some off of the internet. :x

I scour the salvage yards for nice hose clamps - filling up a one-gallon bucket for $10.

Specifically, Audis, BMWs, and Mercedes.

My only suggestion is to quit buying junk clamps and don't over tighten them. Junk yard trips usually net a handful of good ones without too much effort. Made in USA Tridon's have never left me down I think NAPA still carries them. The big box store (AZ / PA) ones are pretty junky.

Tell me about it. I can't tell you how many times I've gone all the way up to the parts store, get a part and it break, not fit or not work properly. I never thought about the junkyard thing. I'll have to do that next time I go to one. I guess the same could go for trim screws and other fastners.

Oh, I've never had any luck with those "tower" clamps. I pass on them.

When I want heavy duty hardware I look at the industrial supply houses like:

www.grainger.com

while I was looking I also found this:

http://www.germanautoparts.com/Hardware ... ose+clamps

and this:

http://www.jamestowndistributors.com/us ... o?pid=1718 <these are not perforated
... I've got skills, ingenuity and no regard for maintaining any kind of historical preservation/authenticity...

Thanks guys! I like HIO's idea about junk yards. Never thought about it really. There's a huge variety of hose clamps and trim clips/screws.

I've been lucky ordering ones off Rock Auto. Gates brand. I agree, the ones at the parts stores nowadays are garbage.

Also like Rock auto, especially for expensive order stuff.
Quality stuff is still available, mostly gotta mailorder it though.
I don't know why people always recommends NAPA. Do you realize in some parts of the country NAPA is much worse than Oreilleys or Autozone? And theres still some good NAPAS but they aren't too many here in W Washington.
