1970s 4x4 or 4x2?

Post by GTWilliams »

When I Google (images) 1977 Ford XLT, I get a lot of hits. But I find many are 4x4 but don't say they are 4x4. I'm a newbie. Is it just presumed they are 4x4? Or do people presume by looking you can just tell? Are they looking at just the height? I presume a 150 2WD is 5 lug. Correct? But how can you tell the difference between 250 4x2 and a 4x4? Is there any other clues I'm missing from outside pics? I can ID a Hi-Boy. (And yes, I did search for this question before I posted).

F250 4x4 is a highboy and has the front leaf springs, straight front axle and hub sticking out the center of the wheel. F100's are 5 lug and have the hub sticking out the center of the front wheel (I forget but am pretty sure they had the straight axle and springs as well). Of course both have an extra shift lever on the floor.

I guess the answer is you do need to get close enough to see the hubs. I was just wondering if there was something else I might be missing. Thanks.

Try 4X2, instead of 2X2.
4X4 = 4 wheels, 4 drive
4X2 = 4 wheels, 2 drive

One other give away clue is that a 4 x 2 won't have a diff in the front.
