To modify or not to modify

Post by F2604X4 »

To modify or not to modify?

I'm new to "classic" Ford ownership. In the past, aka back in the day, I owned a 66 pickup, and a 69 Galaxy. But, back then they were just transportation, not something to be admired for the art that they are. I have recently purchased a 72 F260 with 22,000 hard miles on it, it belonged to a fire department and was used as a bush truck. The truck has been beat up some but is pretty solid, mostly all there, and was kept inside for the last 40 years. I'm thinking about adding AC to her, but I'm concerned that doing that large a modification would hurt the value of the truck.
What are the groups thoughts on this?
Thanks. :fr:

Adding AC to your truck is not going to hurt anything as far as value goes. The majority of the trucks that had AC were dealer add ons anyway. So our trucks did not have a standard type of AC system and most trucks with it were equipped with whatever that dealer had in stock at the time.

There are many systems to choose from. I went with the Classic Air Perfect Fit system which was made for our trucks and it went in easily and works very well. I chose that system because it uses the stock air controls and looks the most "stock" and least intrusive. But there are others to choose from as well.

And :wel: to the site!! :fr:

You will have no value issues unless you want to make it a trailer queen 100% original/correct concours show truck. Typically adding A/C is a value adder for us.

I must admit I had to look up F260 and got an education this morning. I had no idea there were so many 'sub' models. An F151?? I always knew the F-111 as the 'The Pig' or 'The Flying Pig'

:wel: to FORDification. I hope you enjoy your stay and your truck as much as we do.

wow damn! that is an awesome truck!

that might actually be worth something, but generally speaking these trucks aren't worth much. good news and bad news... not much you do to improve it will hurt the value and not much you do to improve it will help the value.

if you are buying an old ford truck as an investment, hmm, maybe yours as an exception but by and large they aren't worth a lot. if it does come time to sell it most buyers would rather have added driveability and functionality than have it perfectly original.

I didn't buy it as an investment, I would just hate to shoot myself in the foot. Sounds like the bumps are kinda like the old military two and half ton trucks, no collector market, just cool trucks to play with. :)

I am curious - is the f260 a typo or was there really an F-260?
By the way - nice truck.
Have not tried to sell a bump, but I believe they have some collector's value. Value is in the eyes of the buyer.

I agree with what everyone else has said. These trucks are really the vehicles that will benefit from aftermarket accessories like A/C. You won't go wrong. And just a side note their are a lot of these trucks that can be bought cheap and money put into them to make money. I think that has to do with the recent popularity of them and plentiful stock out there. My boxwood green '68 was not half the truck this black '69 ranger is and I made a good little amount on it when I sold it in Daytona last Thanksgiving so modify away. Make it the way you want it. You already have a great start.
