Hi all. Sorry I'm so intermittent. So I've been using the truck as my daily driver (30 miles each way). She has been good at running 70 mph! I want to update the old gal and make her a little more user friendly, better mileage, and she's burning about a quart a week in oil! it's currently got the 240 inline 6. Will a 300 bolt in place? What about a modern 300? If it matched the 300 it should also match the small block v8 line right? Usually my answer is diesel everything, but I just want simple updates on this one.

Update: found a thread on here http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... =3&t=77171. lots of votes for switching to a 300 six. I love the idea of keeping the inline look, but beefing it up... Is this a hard swap? Should I leave the 3 spd? What about the rear gears?

yup!

that thread has some good advice.

i've gone ahead and grabbed an entire engine, transmission, wiring harness, etc. from a running/wrecked '91 F150

88 was the first year for the M5R2 aka 'mazda' 5-speed light duty trans. it came bolted behind 302 (5.0's) and 4.9's... its a direct swap. its a floor shift with a hydraulic clutch so some modification is needed, but they can be had very cheap. The carb manifolds will bolt right on.

the 86 was the first year EFI, so if you want to avoid all that mumbo-jumbo, a pre 86 engine will be somewhat simpler, it also keeps a mechanical fuel pump. you need to go electric if you use an EFI block.

there was also a 4-speed OD trans that was basically the 3 speed with another OD gear added, that will bring your rpm's down on the highway but it is a lighter duty trans and the ratios are same as the 3 speed, i.e. bad for towing.

don't mess with rear gears for now, much cheaper and easier to swap a junkyard OD trans. you should have 3.7:1 gears... just guessing... which is a pretty good all around ratio for the six.

Sold my 50 ch++y over the weekend. Freed up some funds, now to get on the f100!!! Making a list of everything I need, then everything I want. The to see what I can find my self in junkyards (like newer disc brakes, steering column, seats, etc) then off to price shop online for everything else. Not going extreme, will still be a daily driver but I want cool and dependable!
