Re: 69 Ford Camper Special Budget Project
If he replaces the ring and pinion - or carrier - or both, Then he will need to pay a shop to correctly set up his gears. If they aren't setup properly they will be ruined in a short amount of time.
New R&P kit $150
Bearing & shim kit $50
Carrier $100
Labor $300 - $350
Would be much cheaper and way less time consuming just to find a good used complete axle and swap them out in an afternoon, if he needs all those parts replaced.
But, best I can tell from his pics, his ring and pinion looks fine and his carrier has a few gouges, but no cracks. My biggest concern would be if there is slop in the crosspin bore. If there isn't any real slop from the bore being elongated, he could just clean out the housing very well with brake parts cleaner and a magnet, install a new crosspin with no setup needed and be driving again. No need to replace parts that aren't broken.

Stealth69- where in the heck are you located that a Ring&Pinion and carrier all ready together for $50??? Here in Cali the local parts place is $270 just for R&P and then I'd still have to get a carrier from like Napa or Summit Racing....?

Grease Monkey- When I completely take it apart ill be sure to snap detailed pictures. Might be after the new year though with holiday spending and what not.... Maybe ill ask Santa for all new rear end
Edit- also I've done re-gearing on several vehicles.... Mostly 4x4's... This is a first though for a rear end to be destroyed like this.

Re: 69 Ford Camper Special Budget Project
I was mistaken. A rear axle is much less than I'd thought. $90 for the axle, $47 for the carrier.

It's good that you have done a regear before, save that money for labor and put it towards some other parts!
Best of luck with it, I'm sure you'll have her back on the road in no time!

Re: 69 Ford Camper Special Budget Project
Just pulled the driveline off. Started the truck and it still makes the grinding sound like something isn't fully engaged. Any ideas now? It's almost as if the transmission is trying to go into park and is registering as in park on the colum.... So it's able to start, but is in like reverse or is in another gear.
Let me try to explain this another way.... Say you were driving, you lost breaks an so you tried to slam it into park. That gnarly sound it makes when you do so; that's the sound it's making.
Hope that's a decent explanation. Hope someone can help me with this in words. Thinking of pulling the transmission after Christmas.

Ouch! You've been hit hard! First the rear end, now the transmission. Sorry to hear.

Btw, where are you located? I've got my old 3rd member with 3.89 gears just laying around gathering dust. Worked fine when I pulled it out.

Re: 69 Ford Camper Special Budget Project
Located in Bay Area, California.
But here's what I found out, (common sense and everyone who reads this will be like "Gosh why didn't i think of that?!")
So, since the carrier blew out and the crosspin snapped, it had no traction. Therefore, when you put it in any gear, (besides park) its going to spin no matter what. Further-more, since i had the DRIVELINE disconnected it removes even more weight, causing the transmission to spin even quicker (idling speed at cold start around 1000-1200 rpm), which means my transmission was spinning at 1000rpm with the motor freely.
So, since i jammed it in park, OF COURSE its going to make a slight grinding noise before coming to a stop because it has nothing to slow/stop it before-hand.
Conclusion: Put driveline back on, wait until i get a new/used carrier, then start it and see how it does because when i go to put it in any gear it will then have traction; keeping the tranny from spinning, sending traction to the wheels which are holding the tranny from spinning while in gear.
So, i hope this is a good explanation of what not to do from now on.
If your gears blow out in the rear, dont try to put it in gear and then back into park and not expect some type of grinding sound. Why you may ask? Because your tranny is spinning at idle speed freely because it has no gear in the rear end to stop it and slow its pace.
That's just my so if I'm wrong then correct me, but i was sitting in the truck thinking this and then BAM, brain fart disappears

Re: 69 Ford Camper Special Budget Project
Well hello... Been awhile since I touched the keyboard on my favorite forum... My only forum rather
But I am back from the dead and ready to rumble, I just have a question for y'all. I'm about to completely pull my carrier and pinion out of the rear end and am going to try to do it myself to save me the money for a axle shop to do it. Mind you I've done this before but it's been a LONG time since, need to brush up on my skills, any tips or tricks on how to get this thing out? Any specific tools I might need?
Any ideas (and maybe a step by step picture guide) would greatly benefit me! Thank you so much!
