Clunky Steering

Post by alvald83 »

I just got back from a little camping trip. On the way home my steering would clunk everyone once in awhile when I would turn. It sounds llike it binds up alittle before releasing with a clunk. This is not good since I justhad the gear box replaced last year. I have a '69 F250 with power steering. Any ideas?

Mine did something similar to that. My lower column bearing was toast and allowing the steering shaft to wobble around. My shaft had worn down considerably in that area. Got a better shaft from a member, rebuilt the column, and she steered and shifted like new (3 spd column shift).

Check your front cab mounts. My truck acted the same way maybe worse. Because the cab drops the steering column binds. New cab mounts fixed mine. If you need a quick temp fix, do this. Jack up the truck and put 2x4's between the cab floor and the frame, provided your cab floor is in good shape.
