How much gas?

Post by Nold »

Took my 69 f100 out for a test drive around the neighborhood, and was suprised to learn how much throttle I needed to give it when releasing the clutch. It's a 360 3 on the tree.

Maybe Im just too used to driving a modern manual trans car. Is this normal?

Yep, pretty normal. Old style clutches have a lot more stroke than newer hydraulic clutches and carbs require more mechanical travel than fuel injection systems. It's the mechanical system linkages and overall design.

Thanks for the reply. I've driven manuals my entire life, but this was a different animal. Having a mechanic inspect the engine and tranny this week just to be on the safe side.

Are you talking about pedal travel or engine rpms ?

With a good running engine you should be able to "ease" the clutch out without giving it much (if any) gas.

I'm having to give quite a bit of gas on a flat surface. I'm taking the truck to a guy this week to check everything out.
