While the Mustang makes sense from an ease of finding parts point of view, the gem there is that 62. It is a 2 door car and is numbers matching. As for a resale value on that car, that is where it is at. You should be able to sell that car down the road for at least what you have into it. The 64 is fine, but being a 4 door, there just isnt the demand for that car to get anything for it.

Mustangs are easy to sell too, but that one just doesn't have the options that people would want to get you a good price. I know you are buying it for a DD and not buying to flip it, but I always look at the "down the road" on a vehicle and consider that as well. Just me personally, that 62 seems VERY intriguing to me. I would have to see more of it, but on face value, that seems like the one I would choose. Again, that is off of an add. Seeing them in person would obviously be the deciding factor. :2cents:

Yeah, Rich, I keep going back to that '62 myself. I really like it. Only thing bothering me if it only needs a fuel pump, why hasn't he spent the $20 and 30 minutes to put one on? Then he'd be selling a running car. Also, the 221 is strange to me. I know they were "standard" back them but I know nothing about them. I'm assuming it's just a smaller cube version of a 289? What about aftermarket parts? Also, no mention of the missing bumper and grill parts and I know those aren't cheap or easy to find. I'm looking to just keep whatever I get, no real intention of reselling. Might be my "next project car" after I finish the bump but for now it's just going to be another old used car to me. Whichever one I choose, I'll probably do a few things like putting in a stereo or maybe even adding AC if I can do it cost effectively, but nothing major. Just fix what breaks and drive it work. Thanks for the input!

P.S. Love the Vicky!

Re: Looking for a new DD - who knows about 221 V8s?

Post by sargentrs »

So curiosity got the best of me and I called about the '62 Fairlane. Nice mature lady answered the phone. The story goes... Her husband bought the car for a project. Barn find, original owner died in '79 and the car had been sitting covered in a garage ever since. He bought it, stripped it, did the body work and started putting it back together. Tuned up the 221, poured some gas in the carb and got it to run. She says it runs great although she doesn't know the details of what he did. Bought 3 fuel pumps and none would fit. The can is too close to the block. She said it truly is 53k original miles and when they took the hubs off the brakes looked new. He has the grill and bumper and everything else. Interior is in but the front seat needs a cover. They're retired, sold their house, about an hour from me, bought a new house in FL and moving next month. She told her husband to sell the car. I'm tempted to buy the right fuel pump, put it on for them and try to drive it. Anything different about the 221 vs a 289/302?

Mr Sargent if I recall , some parts from a 260 might also work on that 221 too.

Good luck.

I like the 62. That 2 door looks to be in great cond. It's a unique Ford that every other guy won't be driving. I think you know which ride is right for you :D

If those circumstances regarding the 62 are true, then I think you can't go wrong with that car. That answers the question as to why they didn't put a fuel pump on it. Heck, buy the fuel pump like you said and take it with you and see what the car is all about. If you don't like it, you spent 20 bucks and a couple hours of your time. But the reward of owning that car for that money if all else is good is worth the gamble to me. Good luck whichever way you go, but personally, I would be looking at that 62 first.. :2cents:  :D

Re: Looking for a new DD - new find

Thanks for the input, guys!

A new one popped up on CL yesterday! This just may be the one... https://atlanta.craigslist.org/nat/cto/5088556114.html

Rich, the lady said they had bought 3 fuel pumps and they were all wrong. Checking RockAuto and Advance Auto websites they only reference the one canister type. O'Reillys website offers 3 options, the canister style and, depending on wiper configuration, electric or vacuum operated. That's probably why they got the wrong one. I'd have to talk to the guy some more first. If it's the original engine and sat for 20+ years, and he didn't freshen it up and he hasn't been running it, it's a ticking time bomb. Crank it up and drive it 100 miles a day and stuff will start leaking or blowing. They haven't driven it around any so no idea if the suspension is ok or will it need new bushings, etc. I'm just a little leary. If that '64 I just posted the link to pans out, that's probably the one I'll get. Factory AC installed. Even it doesn't work, everything's already there.

Mr Sargent that 64 Fairlane looks pretty good.

It says 289 is that the motor it came with?

The 64 Fairlanes that I remember came with 260 v8 (which were tough little motors) but just wanted you to be aware of this.

Haven't been able to get in touch with the guy to talk to him yet. Called and tried to leave a message but his voicemail box was full so sent a text. He hasn't called me back yet.

He finally called me today and we talked about it. He said "let me tell you what's wrong with it first. There's a ding in one of the trim pieces on the passenger fender. There's a 4" scratch around the lock on the trunk. The paint's got a small chip on the rear driver's door.." and so on. I asked about the interior and he said "Nah, it's in great condition". Does it run consistently, any issues? "Oh no, it starts first turn of the key and purrs like a kitten. Tracks straight, no rattles or anything. I drive it every day, it's the only car I have. But it does have a scratch on the...." I just laughed at him and told him I'll be there this weekend. The AC doesn't work but it's all there. He says he's never used it, just the heat in the winter and that works fine.
