update- radius arm extension

Post by boots »

K, Its been a while, but I finnaly got the parts so I can work on my front end rebuild and radius arm drop/extension. The drivers side is complete, I got the kingpins in today, caster looks good, All thats left is to do the left side kingpin, bolt the new steering up, and then put in a new rag joint. Ill post pictures today or tommorow. I left my camera outside and it needs new batteries.

Question about kingpins though, shouldve asked this before. the shims go were the red arrow is pointed right? and the bearing below that goes up so that the part that spins inside it is facing down away from the i-beam?

Yup. The shims on top of the bearing. Get as many shims in as you can.
Make sure it takes grease ok when you get it reassembled. :)

ok thanks, glad I did it correct. I used regular auto grease when putting everything together, but did not use a gun to fill the ends yet. Im going out to the store tommorow to buy a new gun, and some good grease. I hope everything runs smooth when I get the rig on the road again sometime in the next 2 weeks.... she started right up yesterday for the 1st time in 4 months. :D

got the steering on today, finished kingpins, tied up some loose ends, all thats left is to put the new rag joint in, and bolt up passenger side radius arm and coil spring, then bolt the shocks back up (oh and cotter pins :) ). Looks like Im going to need a drop pitman arm. But first im going to see how this bad boy drives on the street.

Update: Pretty much everything is done, still have to run out and get new cotter pins, have to get the nut and a new bolt to hold on the passenger side radius arm, (lost the nut, and the bolt got messed up so it wont thread now) but I stuck it in there so I could put all the tires on the floor, and then I have to put the new rag joint in. btw, Im having trouble with getting the new rag joint in. I got it for 6 bucks (help packs) and just not sure how to get the old one out, I loosened the 2 bolts, and then there are 2 studs that go through the rag joint as well. How do thoes come out? picture of were I am with it right now http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v629/ ... 010050.jpg

I had to pull the steering column to replace my rag joint but mine was in much worse shape than yours. I bought the whole assembly, not just the rubber.
I can't really tell from the picture, but it looks like the lower bearing might be out on your steering column.
